What would we classify a  handheld gaming pc as? Is it a laptop but with a game controller rather than a keyboard built in? Is it a console but not locked down to a console OS? Is it some third option?

I feel like hand held gaming PC are in between a laptop and a separate third thing.

Nintendo Switch clones if you wanna oversimplify it

A laptop is its own thing and a handheld gaming PC its own thing not really an overlap as they focus on different things (you can game on laptops but they arent just for gaming as they can do other things fairly competently)

I edit my posts for so if you saw a typo.... no you didn't, you are just crazy

They're generally discussed in the Mobile Gaming category on this forum, I believe. That's where I've made my threads for my testing with handhelds, even when docking them with an eGPU.

As a side note, I think it's really weird how we humans have developed an apparently inherent need to taxonomize everything

Categorization doesn't seem weird to me at all. Seems natural, and generally useful, if not crucial, depending on the situation.

Side effect of advanced pattern recognition

We evolved to notice patterns (both visual and logical ones) to a WAY higher degree than other animals and to streamline the process we started taxonomizing and categorizing everything that fits said patterns to make it easier

A good example is "we see a man eat a berry and he dies, we see another man eat the same berry and he also dies (repeat a few times and you have a pattern)"

You established a pattern. If said pattern repeats with other berries you categorize them in the same boat as dangerous thus making a category of berries that you cant eat

Thats at least how it started and now here we are 🙂

Oh absolutely, categorization is useful in many different situations. I should be more specific about what I mean because I probably erred and made too broad of a statement.

What I'm talking about is the fact that people seem to have a tendency to want objective categorization of things that are inherently subjective. This happens a lot with genre. Like, when I was younger I spent way too much time in metal forums arguing about which bands were "true metal" and which were "false metal." People in that scene acted like this was some sort of objective thing that was universally true, but in reality the "genre edge" between metal and not-metal is subjective and fuzzy.

The same thing happens with games. How many times have you seen arguments online about whether X game is a "Soulslike" or not? Like, it doesn't matter whether, say, Death's Door is a Soulslike or not, but some people seem to have a deep personal stake in including or excluding certain games from the genre.

I hope that clarifies what I'm getting at lol

Oh for sure. It's definitely possible to go a little too far into the weeds, to the point of being unhelpful. Sometimes something just is what it is, yet people sometimes just don't like something if there's no label.

As far as OP, while I'd certainly say a handheld is much closer to a laptop than a desktop, I do think I'd just put it as it's own, completely distinct thing.
