GPU external riser connection

Go to solution Solved by jaslion,

Why not just connect the gpu internally? or just get a better single card? Pcie 3.0 x1 is slow enough to lose a good bit of performance even for 3d rendering. can your software even understand multi gpu's? What gpu are you getting?

Also do know that you need an extra psu to run it on it's own. This is a very clunky setup when your rig in the footer can just have a second gpu installed if you so wish.

No they use a usb 3.0 short cable as a pcie cable. Its cheaper to use existing stuff than invent their own cables. These are NOT usb ports they are just using the connectors. These have NOTHING to do with the usb protocol and if you plug in a usb device will often damage it.

Hello everyone!

I want to install an "external GPU  docker" like the ones that are used for mining but I want it to add more power to my 3D renders.

I found one on Amazon that seems perfect for me and it connects to the PC with a PCIE 1x small card with an USB 3 port in it... I was wondering if it is just an USB 3 addition card so I can connect the docker to any USB 3 Port on my pc or if it's some kind of reuse of the connection.

Someone knows something about that?

My rig:

Case: Chieftec CI-01B-OP "The Cube"

Motherboard: Gigabyte B450M DS3H Rev.1

CPU: Ryzen 9 5900X

Cooler: ThermalRight Assassin King 120 SE with TF-4 Thermal paste

GPU: NVidia RTX 2070 Super Blower Style (HP OEM)

RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 3200 2x16

PSU: Itek BD700 DC-to-DC

Thanks, that's what I was looking for! 😄 I have to plan things differently than initially planned.

About the rest:

I want to add another GPU idendical to the one that's installed in the case, simply the case isn't big enough for two GPUs. And I can't use a different case due to space in my work desk. I'm planning to 3D print (on some online service) a small box where accomodate the extra hardware and put it on a shelf above my monitors.
I know 1x is slow but in my case it doesn't matter, the software doesn't need super speed to work correctly, just two identical GPUs or even two different ones with same VRAM amounts.
Yes, my software can manage many GPUs at same time (16 if I'm not wrong) so there's no problem.
I'm getting a second 3060TI 8Gb to go along with the first already installed. But I'm really curious how the GPU can change things here... The size perhaps?

Yes, I know it needs its own PSU and I already have one perfect for the role, I just need the "adapter" to make it run along with the one installed in the case. A few cord extensions and it will go inside the external 3D printed box.

Thanks for the answer! 😉
