What wattage do I need?

Go to solution Solved by WoodenMarker,

A decent 500w or quality 450w would be plenty.

CX isn't very high quality but something like the cx500 does the job just fine.

The Pure Power also works.

What wattage would I need for this set-up?

After people recommending 500w I was going to go for that, but with time I have decided overclocking will be worth it so if I were to overclock the CPU and GPU (not excessively - I want to get a good lifetime out of my components) What wattage would you recommend?

It's probably in the range of 500-600w I'm guessing, probably the corsair CX series or the Be Quiet Silentwings, taking into account I want my components to last 4-5 years.

Thanks for the assistance!

P.S. Please don't recommend other builds, I've spent time deciding on these components! I don't mind if you want to suggest to change a component or two and I will take note.

I think that the 4GB of ram seems a bit small. I say 8GB so your system can leave some in case all of it is taken up. Trust me, some programs, like browsers, take up a lot of ram.

I agree, 4GB is a bit slim.

As for Wattage, if you get a good quality PSU, 500 will most likely be enough, even with some overclocking.

Edit:

I own a Corsair CX500, and it's pretty good, used it with an i7-920 and pushed it to 4GHz no problem.

The crowd had gathered there to watch him fall, to watch their hopes destroyed. They watched them beat him, they watched them break him, they watched his last defense deployed.

There was not a man among them who would let himself be heardFrom the crowd, from their collective fear, arose these broken words:

"We are the dead."

I'm definitely going to upgrade to 8GB, forgot to add that to the part list  ;)

500 or 600 for headroom. I depends on the quality of the power supply though.

Will the corsair CX series be high enough quality? Or even this:

Get 8gb of ram in a dual kit 2x4gb and an rm550, it'll be more than enough for now. Unless you can't get wired Ethernet or a power line adapter, don't get the wireless card, there isn't a need for it really.

Didn't think about a power line adapter, that should be much better than the wireless card! Many thanks!!  :D

EDIT: Does this work by plugging it in and simply connecting my computer to it using an ethernet cable?

Those are both fine ones. They are meant for budget but are very good for the money.

A decent 500w or quality 450w would be plenty.

CX isn't very high quality but something like the cx500 does the job just fine.

The Pure Power also works.

Even if I'm overclocking? And will the PSU last me a good 3-5 years (the computer will be used for gaming ~2-3 hours per day, then like an extra 2-3 hours doing low power consumption tasks)

Yes, it's fine for oc'ing. The system barely pulls over 300w at load. The psu should be fine but there's a 3 year warranty so you should hopefully be fine even if something fails.

Sounds stupid, but I'm not confident using power calculator recommendations to choose a power supply. I have tried using them, before coming here to ask - hence I have a vague idea that I need around 500-600w. Before I was gonna go for a 750w, but people notified me that was overkill haha  :P

I find it's best to ask on here because I can find people who can actually tell me what power supply wattage I need for what I intend to do with my build - and they'll give extra info about whether there's enough headroom etc.

one must be plugged into a wall socket next to the router, with an Ethernet cable going from the router to the adapter. Another must be plugged into a wall socket by your pc, with an Ethernet cable going from it to your pc. You have to use a wall socket, not an extension cable socket, as it causes interference and reduces the performance.

oh right that's a problem for me, I've only got one socket close to my desktop (used for extension) to power a printer, charge phone, power computer etc. Another option is running a long Ethernet cable round half of my room so I'll have to check the length of the Ethernet cable I have.

And it turns out I have a powerline adapter in my house for the TV (that's downstairs unfortunately!) so I could just buy one to go with that set - will it need to be the exact same model?

You can get powerline adaptors that have 'passthrough' so you can plug an extension lead into the front of it. Here is an example - http://www.netgear.co.uk/home/products/networking/powerline/xavb5601.aspx

Thanks! That's really helpful. Just now I quickly went to check what powerline adapter I have already installed and it is a passthrough one at 500mbps.
