Win10 64 bit
GPU : MSI RTX4070 (GDDR6x)
CPU : i5-10400F
Mobo : Gigabyte H510M S2H
RAM : 32GB (16x2) G.skill aegis 3200mHz
PSU : 700W 80+ Gold

So after installing my new GPU (4070 from a 2060) my frames have been worse. I've searched for fixes like enableing XMP but that has not seemed to help. Could it be i'd need to update a few other parts?
(drivers are up to date)

Upgrading your CPU might help, though Microsoft is going to nuke windows 10 in October, therefore, I would get a new CPU and a windows 11 key from KeysFan, or I would just buy a version of windows 11 from your local microcenter(USA only). I would also get a new MoBo, though your PSU might also be the culprit. I will tag @Hinjima, @OddOod and @strange13930. They may be able to help out. I am more of a rookie PC builder, so I would consult someone else as well.

Forgot to mention running games on 1440p.

maybe set your resolution in setting to 1080p. That may help.

Did you completely remove the drivers for the 2060 before installing the ones for the 4070?

Check in device manager (right click on the windows button in the bottom right corner of the screen -> device manager) and under display adapters make sure it doesnt say something like "Microsoft basic display adapter" or show a little warning sign over the name

First, He should definitely be seeing a large uplift in performance, even with a weaker cpu. Unless the only games he is playing are really really cpu limited.

Second, a windows 10 key will work for windows 11, there is currently no need to purchase a new key.

700w psu is plenty for a 4070 and (only draws 200 ish watts)

Changing the resolution should also not have much of an effect, lower resolutions are MORE cpu bottle necked as there is less work for the gpu. The 4070 is more than capable enough for 1440p.

In that vein, @J u s t Q do you mind sharing what games you are testing with?

They arent gonna nuke it, they are gonna stop updating it

After 14 October 2025, Microsoft will no longer provide free software updates from Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. Your PC will still work, but we recommend moving to Windows 11. Windows 11 offers a modern and efficient experience designed to meet current demands for heightened security.

Did you uninstall the 2060 drivers and did you plug in all the pcie power cables?

Really hard to say anything definitive without seeing the raw data in game. At the very least, a phone picture showing the full Nvidia overlay of data in a game.

You can upgrade from 10 to 11 for free still, no need to purchase an 11 key. Just use the Windows 11 Media Creation Tool from Microsoft's website or use a Windows 11 USB installer to upgrade. No key needed.

Figuring out your CPU and GPU usage while gaming/stress testing would help us to better determine what steps to take.

If you did not DDU the old GPU's drivers before installing the 4070 and installing it's drivers I'd recommend doing that first and foremost, update Windows and the rest of your system drivers as well while you're at it.

It very well could be a CPU bottleneck but that's what checking the usage will determine. If it is, a used 10700/ 10700K or 10900/ 10900K could be snagged off of eBay for a pretty good price. Though your motherboard is a lower end board so maybe look for a combo with a Z series board if you want to grab a K series processor.

Well, i do play valorant and league, there ive noticed the biggest FPS drops, used to run at 200+ now league barely gets 90 and valorant struggles to run on more than 150.
also i play Apex, Sea of Thieves and Valheim (ik that valheim is currently in alpha or beta and poorly optimised), but for sea of thieves i saw a slight FPS boost but as for apex it cant run more than 70 frames.

i did uninstall the 2060 drivers, but i did not do anything with the pcie cables. The video i watched on replacing a gpu only mentioned uninstalling the old cards drivers

the connector on the right goes into your gpu and the connectors on the left connect to the pcie cables from your power supply, there maybe 3 or 4 instead of two. Make sure they're all plugged in.

Have you done through the games settings?  Some games will change the settings when they detect your GPU has improved, so it might be pushing more intensive graphical features than you were using before.

i did notice that it changed some of the setting to higher, but even after lowering them back to what i ran before, the performance still isnt there

They all seem to be plugged in correctly. There is one cable that is just hanging out, but i couldnt find a place where it's supposed to be plugged in. It has been not plugged in since i got the pc. I also did some ''benchamrking'' with msi afterburner and it seems to be running better without wpengine running, could that have been the issue??? Also adding a picture with the unknown cable.20250325_201254.jpg?ex=67e443cf&is=67e2f24f&hm=7c7f2d6ced139967c64d74f0e889f2c42fe1dd33219aa39ba7c34dc0e1a9937a&

PCI-E power is weird.  Occasionally you'd see 2x4 (8-pin) connectors, or 2x3 (6-pin) connectors.  Now Nvidia is trying to push 2x6 12V HPWR connectors that melt.  Looks like they just pigtailed a 2x4 and a 2x3 together.  Other than making your cable management look worse, that shouldn't be a problem.  However, the fact they did that tells me the cable's probably old.  I think the 10 series had 14 pins, and that's now over a decade old.

the Nvidia app should have a intake overlay, can you take a screen shot of it as you play?
