For ethernet wall plug a box is not necessary to be installed like an electrical plug you use a wall bracket that holds onto the back of the drywall giving screw points for the ethernet jack wall plate to screw into once the correct sized hole is cut.

Couldn't you just use hollow wall boxes which use multiple circles like these?

This would make it a lot easier and cleaner looking.

Friend from the US, please don't take this personal.

The circle installation boxes are used in europe. But from my own experiences I can say that the US power installation are far behind what we have in Europe, or what is standard in Germany. The US is such a developed country, so I can't understand why they still stick to their old ways of power installation. I got shocked by a power socket in the US, while touching the two metal pins as I was trying to plug something in behind the couch. The power didn't turn off. If I would do the same thing at my house, I would probably be safe.

Also the most newer house in europe use Wago, which is a safer way of connecting wires.

Here this video is pretty straight forward:

1) measure and cut the hole

2) Install the bracket for the wallplate

3) Then thread the Ethernet cable through the now installed bracket

4) Connect the Ethernet cable to the Ethernet jack for the wallplate

5) Screw into place.

If you are running Ethernet through the walls for the first time, then I highly recommend using these instead of regular punch-down ethernet keystone jacks:

Cat6 RJ-45 Ethernet Keystone Coupler Jack

They're available in Cat5 as well but you may as well use cat6 (And it should work with gigabit either way). Basically with these, the cable you run through the wall is just plugged into one end of the jack, and then another cable is plugged into the second end.

You can still make your own bulk cable or you can buy pre-made runs/patch cable. Less hassle than the traditional punch-down jacks.

Honestly you're much better off (learning wise) to either youtube a how-to video, or better yet, just go down to your local hardware store and ask. Do you have a Home Depot or whatever else is popular in the USA nearby? If so, just drop on by and tell them you need someone to show you how to cut a rectangle cutout in drywall for installing wall-plates. They'll walk you through the basics and show you which tools you need.

BASICALLY, the video posted by @W-L is exactly what you need. Trace the hole using a pen or a sharpie (marker), then cut along the lines. I would recommend using a drill in one of the corners of the trace (or all 4 corners) first though. Or even drill several holes side by side. This helps you get the drywall knife in at first and makes starting the cut easier. If you use a power saw, it'll be easier and faster, but just take it SUPER slow.

Oh ok I get at what your saying now since i thought you were refer plaster as to drywall.

But in that case if you have a oscillating Dremel tool it will work really well for this situation, if not you can carefully make a bunch of holes in the pattern of the bracket and carefully remove the plaster then slowly cut at the lathe on the back with a small hand saw, just be careful not to pull on the lathe while cutting to not make the surrounding plaster fall off. You can also go at it with a utility knife through the plaster to reach the lathe in the back but it may take some time epically if they layered the plaster on thick.
