OOOOOO cool! My laptop has the i7 12700H, siblings!

Your laptop 4060 is going to have less power, more heat, etc. than the desktop 3080. Nevermind the fact the 3080 is, on paper, more powerful than the 4060. In some games the difference will be huge, the 3080 has over 2x the CUDA cores... in other games it will be less of a difference. But these benchmarks above seem about right, to me. I think it's the resolution causing the FPS dip, and nothing more.

I've had my Gigabyte RTX 3080 10GB for about two years now, and overall have enjoyed it's performance, but recently I had bought a Dell laptop with a RTX 4060 to use on the go and have been curious about it's performance.

When running Fortnite at 1440p Medium* on my RTX 3080, I see an average of about 180fps.

When running Fortnite at 1080p Medium* on my RTX 4060 laptop, I see an average of closer to 200fps.

I understand that the difference between 1080p and 1440p plays a role, but I feel like there still shouldn't be this little of a gap between a desktop gpu and a laptop gpu. Is my 3080 under performing?

While I haven't played Fortnite, maybe someone else can comment with that experience, I can say in general resolution does make a noticable difference to framerate. It's not a small factor. Can you test your 3080 at 1080p Medium and see what that does? I feel this would answer it pretty conclusively.

I don't know how much Fortnite relies on the CPU, but in general games can be greatly impacted by this, or not. Do these two computers have similar CPU specs?

1440p is 77.7% more pixels to render than 1080p. So you could roughly expect the same GPU to run at 200 / 1.77 = ~113 fps. The 3080 should be around 65% faster than the 4060. That would mean you can expect around 113 * 1.65 = 187 fps.

This is only a very rough estimate, since 65% more perf on average doesn't necessarily mean you get that much in every game.

Use something like Intel PresentMon or MSI Afterburner to monitor GPU usage, could be its utilization is below 90%, indicating a CPU limit, but even then I'd say the performance sounds about right.

Re-Ran with the same settings with 1080p on both:

-RTX 3080 averaged 200fps

-My gpu utilization sat around 90% on the 3080 when testing 1080p

-RTX 4060 Laptop averaged 200fps (again)

Something just irks me about this!! Maybe it's just fortnite being fortnite.

On top of this, I ran a Furmark 2 bench:
