I'm only looking for a case not a build, so think this is the better section. As subject, I'm looking to build a new NAS, and the hardest part is finding a suitable case. This is intended to be an always on system. Some random requirements:

  • Minimum 4x 3.5" bays. More is a plus.
  • Should take a mATX mobo as I plan to reuse existing.
  • Cube style case, not towers. Should looks nice, as subjective as that will be.
  • Has airflow over the drives.
  • Is not Node 804. I have one already and would like something different.

Had a look around, and the Jonsbo N4 NAS looks like a strong candidate. 6x 3.5" bays, of which 4 are on a backplane. Looks good. I might need a new SFX PSU for it though. No room for ATX? I can work around the low profile backplates and cooler height as needed.

The only other maybe is the older Jonsbo N3, but I'm not sure it is what I'm after. It is ITX and I have nothing to fit that.

Anything else I might have missed in this space?

Currently building in a N4 myself.
It's workable, but definitely no room for ATX.

If you have the room (I didn't since it had to fit into a standard IKEA cube), treat yourself to the N5.
If you don't have room and don't mind the price hike, consider the Sagittarius. I did consider it myself, but the shipping fees didn't make it worth. Wolfgang did a build in it recently.

I've gotten to know some stuff, but am far from omniscient, so don't take my advice as gospel and wait for other opinions - I just like throwing in my two cents when I can.

I somehow managed to miss that model. Doesn't seem to exist in stores yet.

Is it only available from AliExpress? Forgot to say, I'm in the UK and would only buy from within UK.

Will have a deeper dive into those options later. N4 is in stock right now, and not very widely.

As far as I know, sadly.

Technically not a store, but considering the delivery date, likely currently in the UK. Pricy as heck though.

I always say, if you're building a NAS, it's best to get a cheap SFF box, an LSI HBA, and a diskshelf (easy to DIY)

Please can you provide examples of what you call a diskshelf is? I tried searching the term and it is anything from "I'm not doing that" to "I'm not paying that".

I missed that somehow. New seller, no info on them.

I don't think I need that many bays. I'd go broke filling it even if I needed that capacity.

though I prefer ones with mounts for fans.
I even 3D printed a 16bay job and tossed it in an old PC case. V fun.

Thanks, so basically DIY disk holders. While it could be ultra-low cost, I think I'd like something more secure and doesn't involve me making it, as it will never get finished.

Has potential, but cost to get it to me in UK makes it not viable.
