$20 water cooling

Go to solution Solved by decidedlydead,

I use am4. Ryzen 5 PRO 1500

You won't be going water cooling with $20. What cpu do you have? What is the cooler height limit of your case?

What chip?

Even with the classic external car rad aquarium pump loop 20$ is quite the stretch, i mean you could buy used maybe even scrap ones if available but thatll be alot more effort than its worth compared to buying a new one imo, though apparently you can also use heater cores for this and thats probably more viable to buy used/scrap if available

Aquarium pumps wise gonna need something with decent h max and the 107 or something aquarium pump i once tried with this kinda setup seems to be able to do it albiet at 10$, again maybe a used/scrap one

Res you can probably use a bucket or something like that and tubes wise even a garden hose will work though good luck diying the fittings/adapters, did mine with bottlecaps and melted plastic which is a horrible way to do it but it worked

All just to be beaten by spending 10-15$ more on the dime a dozen dual tower heatpipe coolers thats out now in reliability and actual usability beyond the CPU and board you DIY it to. Also you forgot the block cost to bolt to the CPU.

i was only born in 2007 and i just know about it cause some whacky watercooling experiment videos, basically the cheapest and best price/performance if you need a crapton of cooling capacity so basically completely useless unless you are running hedt or delidded chip

tried building one cause wolfdale e8000s kept running really hot but eventually figured out that this was a futile effort though the only thing that was really missing is the block and a bucket for the res

water is like that inbetweener between air and subzero where its better than air but nowhere near a chiller or a phase change loop and only useful if your cpu can even transfer its heat to the block and has a high heat output

considering the hassle and space one of these takes up id rather just go straight for a chiller loop or a phase change system instead cause atleast i get some decent temps out of it and besides its funnier to challenge and demolish old ln2 world records with just aircooling

Spoiler

water probably isnt going to let me push this thing any further than 3400 but put it under a chiller and -50c then maybe i can hit 3600+ with it and as far as i can tell none of the old ln2 records for 45nm even come close to this thing as they all seem to be below the 3200 mark

block yeah thats gonna take quite some luck, without a decent block the setup is completely useless and will definitely fall flat on its face even compared to a 35$ phantom spirit 120

with a decent block and a car rad itll blow the phantom spirit out ofnthe water but probably not at 20$ unless you get really lucky with deals on used stuff or maybe salvage an aio block from a broken aio which should also work if you cant find someone selling an actual waterblock at a decent price and mounting hardware shouldnt be an issue if unavailable cause zipties exist and these blocks are pretty lightweight unlike a tower cooler

and i also forgot about used aios some of them are going dirt cheap these days but perf is probably not gonna go beyond the ps120 perf wise cause old aio, probably will still beat the 20$ assassin king or burst assassin though

I won my class in Forum Warz with an air cooled E8600 ES, using an Ultra 120 Extreme 😄

563x8.5 iirc in the disgusting summer heat with no AC. Was like 30-35c in my house, had a box fan right next to my Stacker lol

Good times.

You could probably find a 6 dollar air cooler from AliExpress or something and be fine.

Thats ancient and nowhere near powerful, maybe if you were talking a 4.8ghz+ x58/79/99 chip as those output tons of heat

Just put some cheap tower cooler on it and call it done, if you never want to upgrade the cooler again just put a phantom spirit 120 on it and you wont need to replace it for future cpus whenever you decide to upgrade to the much faster 5700x3d or even the 9800x3d
