Thanks, I was looking for it but I really do not have any bitlocker options, neigher by right click on drive or searching in security options... no padlock icon either.

One detail is that I never use an email account... BYPASSNRO on installation, using local account only.. this might be why.

I found this command to confirm: manage-bde-statusc:

(ss below)

Safe to swap right? I guess local windows acc password doesn`t do anything like last time...

That looks good to go, Bitlock is not active on that drive.

Hey guys,

Some years ago I bought a notebook (HP Victus) and remember how easy it was to just plug my previous desktop 1tb ssd (windows 10, password protected) on the secondary slot and see/access all my files without issues... I later format the drive and installed W11 to use as main one.

Today I am using this same notebook and I believe it has bitlocker enabled by default, latest W11 24H2, password protect.

Question: does this procedure still work? I mean, removing this ssd and pluging on the secondary slot of another pc, I will be able to "see/copy" all my files from there?

thanks!

No, the bitlocker crypto key is inside CPU ( TPM 2.0 ) so you will need to decrypt it before removing ( or you will have to enter the decrypt key in the new PC ).

it’s easiest to just decrypt it, before removing from notebook… and encrypt it again, in the new PC.

Thanks! I am running W11 Home so it doesn`t show any bitlocker options in Windows, I am guessing it is disabled but IDK due the BIOS status...

Those are the options in BIOS, should I mess w it in there and clear TPM? just scared to be unable to access it afterwards...

TPM Device - Available (other option is hidden)

TPM State - Enabled

Clear TPM - No

Restore Security settings to Factory Defaults

Bitlocker is included now in the Home editions starting with 24h2.

If it was updated from a previous version to 24h2 then it "should not" be enabled, but better check it first.

If it was clean installed with a Win 11 24h2, both Home and Pro, then the Bitlocker is default set to active.

Do not clear TPM in bios.

Go into Windows, disable Bitlocker from there and let it fully decrypt the drive before moving it.

  • 2 months later...

Hey everyone! bumping this thread again...

Hope someone can help! I believe to be stuck in a bad spot here...

I got a new Asus laptop with 2 nvme slots, then unplugged the 1tb drive from my previous HP laptop (print above, with w11 partition booting from it) and installed on Asus second slot.

Well.... asus bios and windows recognizes it, but it lost the boot partition somehow... not available to boot from.

Inside W11 file explorer (using asus oem nvme) it shows the 1tb drive on disk management/diskpart but I cannot do anything or access/map it... its running fine but all options are greyed out... I am stuck without access to it and the only option is to delete volume... messing w diskpart details says -volume unknown and list just one volume... seems like its protected somehow as it should be showing the other volumes left by w11 installation...

Any ideas on how to access and recover the files on it? I would just plug it back on the previous HP laptop and try booting in windows, but here is the dumb part...I sold it in a rush and didn't backup the files, just unpluged the drive thinking I would be able to access them easily as before.. ouch.
