I just bought a new mobo to upgrade my PC and now the cpu fan stays at max speed all the time. I tried changing settings in Q-Fan and Cool and Quiet, but nothing happens. Now Windows 7 doesn't start. In safe mode it hangs when it isloading CLASSPNP.SYS and I ca't see the BSOD because it resets.

Here are my specs:

CPU: AMD Athlon II 250 (3.0 Ghz)

New MB: Asus M5A78L-M/USB3

Old MB: From an HP G5315es-m

Fan: Stock

RAM: 8GB Kingston

GC: Gigabyte GTX 660 OC

HDD: 500GB Seagate

PSU: 480W TooQ

Did you tried installing windows 7 again? Usually windows 7 doesn't require you to format and reinstall OS but the drivers of your old mb might be conflicting and causing it to halt at start.

I haven't, because the first thing I want is to turn the rpm down. However Ubuntu does start

I still suggest that you get a fresh windows in there frist. There should be Asus Probe II or some program like that that may allow you to control your fans from windows. Those auto profiles usually never work unless you have an equipment that already runs fairly cool when there is no load to system. But as far as I can remember the time I had with my AMD chipsets, they are not running cool at all, even with after market fancy coolers.
+ If you can get windows working you can monitor the degree and fan speeds in 1 monitor so you'll have a better idea of what's going on.

I have found that the mobo has a 4-pin fan connector and my fan has only a 3-pin connector, that may cause the problem?

I will try now to get a fresh install of Win7 x64

3pin is not pwm, which means it will run at max all the time (i think)

My Setup :P

And why my old mobo could control it? It was 3-pin but the fan was controlled by voltage

the voltage must be higher

Sorry I don't understand, do you mean that the new mobo is suplying too much voltage?

Anyways I am getting a new fan, what do you think of the Scythe Katana 4?

Your old motherboard might have had voltage controlled 3-pin fan header or just lower powered fan headers. The more voltage (electricity) is sent to your fans the faster they spin.

And is there any way to undervoltage the fan? I can't find anything, and Q-Fan is only for 4-pin fans

There are extension cables with resistors which can under-volt the fan. Try to look for them on ebay or Amazon.

Do you have AI suite installed? Use fan xpert to control fan speed, it will control 3 and 4 pin fans.

What do you think of the Scythe katana 4? I am getting it so i can overclock a bit my processor and hopefully no more fan problems

I dont know anything about them, but they seem to have favorable reviews, does it have PWM fans on it?
