Power Problems, CPU replacement gone wrong

This means you don't need a better rig as long as you only play that game, which is really not demanding, a potato can play it smoothly 🙂

Now if you want to play more demanding games your CPU will be a bottleneck, imo a 14400 or 14600 are way more future proof as they have 6P cores + some Ecores vs only 4 cores on a 12100

I recently got a 14600k to replace my 12100f, and Idk what could have gone worse. Firstly, my CPU is idling at 60 degrees and is going up to 100 when stress tested. I am using a pretty old aio that my cousin gifted to me from his old rig and am using the same brand of thermal paste that kept my 12100f cool, so this worries me. Secondly, my pc is causing the power in my room to go out every time I play games or run cinebench on multicore. This cpu replacement was very disastrous, and I am thinking of returning it. Should I undervolt my cpu? My b660 Aorus Master ddr4 doesn't support overclocking, but it should allow undervolting, but I do not want to lose much performance and don't have experience undervolting cpus. I appreciate the feedback. Thanks!

That, and lower the CPU power limit in BIOS. Though idling at 60C seems a tad high.

I have the power limit at 210W if I remember correctly, and still stable 5.6Ghz. With AIO it's much easier, but you could lower voltage and power limit till the temps are under control.

I am not experienced when it comes to lowering cpu voltages.

OK, if you don't really know how to tinker with voltage and power limit options you should at least buy a decent cooler. 120mm AIO is useless.

I'd recommend some dual tower Thermalright cooler, like: https://pcpartpicker.com/product/79bRsY/thermalright-peerless-assassin-120-se-6617-cfm-cpu-cooler-pa120se-black

or https://pcpartpicker.com/product/w8n9TW/thermalright-peerless-assassin-140-778-cfm-cpu-cooler-peerless-assassin-140-black

or some higher tier model.

Are 120mm aios that bad? It was cooling my 12100f well. Or maybe it was because it was a 12100f...

120mm are around as effective as a single tower air-cooler. It really is not too good. 12100F is very low power CPU, so no wonder.

I'd even say that get AIO for 14600K - Arctic Freezer III 360 if it fits your PC case.

I am broke rn. spend all the money on the cpu. Maybe I should try undervolting?

Yeah, under-volting is really easy, so is actually lowering the power limits, though I cant really instruct where in the BIOS settings they are as all BIOS-es are tad different on different brands of motherboard manufacturers.

You can always clear cmos if the settings are so unstable that PC won't POST. It might take time the tinkering but in the end probably worth it.

I don't think the CPU replacement really went wrong, but rather that your rig that can't handle a 12600K

- Weak cooling => high temps

- possibly bad PSU => power shutdown

You can maybe just drop all boost in BIOS and see what happens at 90W max

AMD R9  7950X3D CPU/ Asus ROG STRIX X670E-E board/ 2x32GB G-Skill Trident Z Neo 6000CL30 RAM ASUS TUF Gaming AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX OC Edition GPU/ Phanteks P600S case /  Arctic Liquid Freezer III 360 ARGB cooler/  2TB WD SN850 NVme + 2TB Crucial T500  NVme  + 4TB Toshiba X300 HDD / Corsair RM850x PSU/ Alienware AW3420DW 34" 120Hz 3440x1440p monitor / ASUS ROG AZOTH keyboard/ Logitech G PRO X Superlight mouse / Audeze Maxwell headphones

Either invest in better cooling and PSU, or swap it for a much cooler 14400

idk. in gaming performance, I didn't notice a difference at all. should I return and save for a new build?

if there's no difference at all you're are seriously GPU bound

What's your system ?

I have a 3070.

I play cpu intensives like valorant and fortnite and cap fps at 180. I play at 1080p.

If you cap fps how can you expect a performance gain lol 😄 ?

Imo it won't change things much, undervolting results in higher clocks and a bit less heat, but not lower power
