apartment patch panel set up for ethernet

Sorry if this is a stupid question! Am I correct in understanding that the patch panel in my apartment has only one of the six RJ45s on the bottom wired for internet and most are wired the POTS panel? My apartment has a number of ethernet wall jacks that I'd like to use but I can't. My internet digging has lead me to find that my two best options are to either

  • Leave my modem/router combo where it is, get a basic unmanaged switch and connect it to the patch panel while connecting one of the LAN ports on my modem/router combo to the closest wall jack
  • Move my modem/router combo to this cabinet and connect the LAN ports directly to the patch panel and then just use the switch or a WAP from one of the wall jacks?

Extra context: I have Xfinity cable internet over coax, and since this is an apartment I probably can't re-terminate any of the cables from the POTS panel to the data panel

while not ideal, you could probably snip the wires right down near the circuit board and then use a punch down tool to connect the wires to the ethernet ports.

It's not ideal because those twisted pairs should not be outside the insulation for more than half a inch to an inch, but can't help it now, if you cut them too short they won't reach the ethernet section.

then you could use  a 5-8 port switch and some short patch cables to put ethernet into the ethernet jacks and therefore your wall sockets.

punch down tools are cheap, 5-10$ on amazon... you'll want to check the wire order in the faceplates as well and match it.

yeah that's what my research has lead me to as well, probably not the solution I want to do since this is a rental, and I've never terminated ethernet cables before. Luckily it's just a studio apartment and of the 4 wall jacks there was just 1 I really wanted to use. That and move my NAS into this closet
