would you want 6800 cl34 or 6000 cl30 for the new 9800x3d from amd?

6000 CL30, the IOD is the same for 9000x3D, so the same rules apply as what's best for the 7800x3D.

3D v-cache also generally cares less about memory speed, it only mattered quite a bit on the 5000x3D CPUs because the FCLK was still linked to MCLK:UCLK. That's where the difference between a 5800x3D with a 3200MT/sec kit or 3600MT/sec mattered, since it was the difference of FCLK running at 1600MHz or 1800MHz.

With Ryzen 7000, they unbound the FCLK, so it runs in AUTO:1:1 instead of 1:1:1. The MCLK:UCLK still prefers 3000MHz, aka 6000MT/sec kits. Lowest and tightest latencies being the best as usual, so anywhere between CL30-CL36 with tight timings. Lower still triumphs over tighter if you had to choose.

Builder/Enthusiast/Overclocker since 2012 with a focus on SFF/ITX since 2014.

6000CL30 for a safe bet, 6400CL32 (or 30 If it exists) with some prayers to get IF run at 2133MHz so it runs 1:1 😛

Anything over that will run 2:1 and be overall slower

Also note that for gaming RAM speed is less important for 3D chips, the cache reduces the RAM bandwidth bottleneck, from the top of my head 6000CL30 is only around max 3% faster than 5600CL36/40 and less than 8% vs non XMP 4800 (depending on games)
