Ive been having problems with the steelseries rival 3 mouse failing.

Its a rather specific problem thats hard to describe but ill try my best.

2 separate models have failed on me the same way, originally the first mouse after maybe half a year of having it but with very little actual use started having tracking problems when playing games (mostly roblox) it would randomly freeze up and ignore small inputs for a moment before returning to normal or after making a larger movement, day after day the issue became worse. When usually it only happened in games and wasnt noticable around the desktop and in other tasks, it then became worse sometimes freezing up completely and ignorning all inputs, ive tried cleaning the sensor, resetting the mouse, uninstalling the GG software or turning off the touchpad, nothing worked. I then sent the mouse back under warranty but the new mouse after maybe a month daily of use started doing the same thing, im also not the kind of person to throw and slam my mouse around.

So im not sure if this is a common issue with the mouse or if theres perhaps something wrong with my laptop?

Im afraid of buying a different mouse because the rival 3 suits me almost perfectly and most other similair mice are too expensive.

Any further questions are welcome and thanks for any help!

(Sorry for any potential misspellings as english isnt my first language)

mouse stutters can be caused by all kinds of usb peripherals, but also harddrives ... typically mechanical ones, but not limited to that either.

so that's your first troubleshooting steps imo.

full system specs, including all peripherals, harddrives, etc?

Windows 11, recently reinstalled. Pentium gold 7505 with its igpu, 8gb ram

I only use a regular minijack headset, no other peripherals like keyboards since its a laptop, also it has a single ssd, not a hard drive. Ive also tried the other usb slot and my sisters pc on the first mouse that failed and there wasnt really a difference.

hmm i see, its hard to say but since it's a laptop there shouldn't really be an issue with usb peripherals etc.

just make sure all drivers are up to date (including chipset and bios) and if there's still no improvements try another/ similar mouse to confirm it doesn't have this issue.

generally i haven't heard a lot of bad stuff about steelseries, but it certainly seems a bit on the lower side regarding quality and usually there's a Logitech equivalent anyways.

im using a g502 hero (usb) and i love it, had lots of cheaper Logitechs before,  all Bluetooth and they all at least had occasional issues with stutters etc (which is likely due to them being Bluetooth)

edit: yeah, its a cheapo wireless mouse... im not surprised.

have you tried the g502 hero? its similarly shaped and its the most - responsive - thing - i ever had (although its not the Bluetooth version, wired only obviously)

Ill try to see if i have any updates available, and the rival 3 is the only "gaming" mouse ive used, ive considered the g502 but it seems too beefy and complex with all those extra buttons for me. It also weights almost twice as much as the rival 3 and i always use claw grip where the g502 seems a bit too big for that.

Also is there a possibility that theres something up with my laptops usb ports just breaking anything plugged into them? Ive also had a cheap mechanical keyboard for like ~35usd i bough a while back that died after 3 days of use

i mean just see if you find a similarly shaped mouse, it doesn't seem to be like a unique shape at all, but wired, no Bluetooth or other "radio" connections... as i said you should try that - because it's likely the issues go away... then its only a matter finding one that's comfortable to you - beats having a mouse you like but that lags you out - imho lol...

as for the hero, i agree it doesn't seem to be good for claw grip, not necessarily because of the size, but you're gonna touch those buttons for sure i suppose...

yea, but unlikely all of them.  its either something software like chipset drivers, or more likely "cheap gaming stuff" breaks more often than others...

i have a dell flat keyboard i bought 2017 for like 18 bucks and used extensively and that's still like almost brand new...  for gaming keyboards you typically have to spend 100 upwards for them to be not shite... mice is a little different,  but the wireless ones you sure as hell don't want to cheap out on either...

Well, ill see. The razer basilisk v3 seems good too since its kind of the same mouse but ive heard that its better than the g502
