Pretty sure ebay just automatically puts no returns accepted if the seller doesn't say otherwise, but shouldn't ebay buyer protection cover me if it's a scam?

Even if there's "no returns" ebay often still lets them start a return regardless. Not actually sure what the "no returns" tag is meant to do... just sits there, menacingly.

Also if you buy with your credit card and get scammed, you can go through your bank. eBay as a platform is pretty big so they'll likely sort it out. Not like you're buying it on some fake eBay.

Pretty much. Things paid for by a credit card technically isn't your money but the banks, that's why they can go after scammers. If the same happened on a debit card, in a way tough luck. Last line of defense is eBay. Of course not like there aren't any downsides. Fall for too many scams and your bank might reconsider giving you a credit allowance. At best just impact your credit score.

This was a godsend during covid, where 9/10 covid test kit providers and shops were scammers.

Debit cards don't offer the same protections. You should really use a credit card. I know it requires a bit more self control for some, but even if you have to get one with a small limit it would be safer.

Personally I use a cash back card, I use it for literally everything. I pay all my bills with it. I charge something, pay it off. I don't even wait for the bill to come in. Never pay any interest, and I get the cash back.
