So I am new to audio, I am currently using some $20 Sennheiser's and on-board audio and I am researching better audio and had some questions...

1.  Why are the Beyerdynamic dt 990 $150 and the 880s are $250

2.  How do the Superlux HD668 compare to Beyerdynamics

3.  If I am using Superlux or the Beyerdynamics not 600 ohm version do I NEED an amp

4.  I am looking at the Schiit DAC and the Mayflower DAC, is the mayflower worth the extra $?

Any other suggestions?

you have new system, so onboard is ok

668b is not balance as name would suggest. it has a bit too much highs

if you want cheap, good open headphones, i suggest Pioneer SE-A1000 for around 50 - 90 $

Cheaper i would go with htf600, they are not completelly closed and have good soundstage. they have good bass, fun headphones but build quality lacks

there is also 681 EVO from superlux, very good heaphone, cheap around 30 - 40 bucks and definitly step up

Scrolled all the way....

after u go more than 80 ohm u would most likely need amp, the best way to know if u do need one is to try the headphone on ur onboard "if u planing to use the onboard that is" and check if it is fine for you or not, some times some onboards are bad "some laptops onboard sound card"

I have a desktop, the problem is I don't really want to buy $150 headphones if I MIGHT need to plop down $100 more for an amp I would like to know.  From my searching around, it looks like it should make noise at least, but not very well.

if u get the 32 ohm u wont need amp, but since it is expensive u will have to go with the 250ohm and u will need amp for that one.

Not true. The 250 ohm Beyers are actually pretty easy to drive. Most motherboards should be fine. If not, you can just grab a $40 Syba dac/amp. It shouldn't be a problem though.

About the DACs, I think the cheaper Schiit alternative is fine. If you're the type that claims to hear a difference from those two DACs, I'm wondering why you're getting the headphones you are looking to get. You could get the dac/amp integrated into one package with the Objective, which I think is a great thing. Of course if you don't need amping now you might need it later, but then you're paying for something you don't really need at the moment.

Maybe you could pick one vs the other based on looks.

Woah, no.

No.

No no no no no.

For the DT990. regular onboard audio is enough for a small minority of people, and the SYBA DAC doesn't get any louder.

The e10 drives my 250 Ohm dt990s plenty loud for me. Then again I've been known to like my audio much quieter than most. Whether or not you want a special amp is really all up to your opinion on that sense.
