Hello All,

This is my first post here. So please correct me if I am not posting in the correct location or breaking any rules.

I am a software developer from India. I primarily work on backend services.
I recently started my own software development company and moved to Dubai, UAE.
The friend that I partnered with is telling me that I should get a macbook, to look premium during our meetings.
Even though I like the macbook pro's hardware. I am a Linux 100% guy. I don't like mac os software.
Plus I prefer to run on linux because sometimes we run into differences between linux vs windows vs macos, and all our servers run linux, so I prefer to use linux for that reason as well.

So, I am torn between Macbook Pro for looking professional, vs not having Linux. (Also, wondering about the CPU+GPU performance difference as well as battery life difference).
I thought about having 2 laptops, but carrying around 2 laptops is not something I can do.

So I wanted the community's opinion on this.
Should I go with a macbook Pro?
Should I go with a different laptop which also projects premium / professional? (Which laptop would that be?)

Thank you everyone for reading this and providing your opinion.

Is this actually a thing?

As was said, Asahi Linux is available for Macs but check how is the compatibility with the SW you need to use.

Just getting any MacBook Pro won’t work - you have to get a 24K gold one with a diamond logo just for the meetings, so everyone knows you have status.

Otherwise, if you decide that the Apple look is important to your biz:

- you can run a linux virtual machine

- remote into your server

- get a little Air just to bring to the meetings

- battery and portable performance is the main point why someone would choose a macbook (MBP 14 base w/ non-Pro chip has the biggest battery life).

I don’t know if the thin lineup of ThinkPads (X1, etc) has a premium/professional status in that part of the world, but that is the only professional looking laptop family (and another cult) I can think of.

From all my 20 years of IT XP it is the first time I hear having a specific device makes you better in something.

I was doing many projects for "100% apple" customers with old shitty thinkpads and nobody gave a f. about it - results matter.

They also did not gave an f. when I told them we should put more effort in android development, until we hit the prod and surprise surprise - 80% of users were android 🥲

I would get whatever I want and put an apple sticker on it 😅 unless you are developing iOS apps, then - you have no choice.

Back-end? Even better, put as sticker that says "96.3% servers run on Linux - so does this laptop"
