Hi,

So i decided to try and switch to linux and i went for fedora (for some context, im a backend developer so its not like i have no clue what linux is, i work with it as a terminal and development platform daily).

My pc hardware is as follows:
gigabyte x670e aorus master (updated to F32 bios)

amd 7800x

nvidia rtx 4080

and a few other stuff but thats probably whats relevant for my issue.

so i managed to install nvidia drivers and it seems to be fine and the pc is stable and apart from afew annoying issue, that i will probably solve at some point, its fine.

the only major issue is, i cant seem to control my fan speed and they seem to be going at a really high (and noisy) fixed speed.

first i tried installing lm sensors, and running sensors-detect which didnt detect anything...

so i searched around and found drivers for my motherboard chip (i think):
https://gist.github.com/bakman2/e801f342aaa7cade62d7bd54fd3eabd8

followed those instruction and now i see the fans and their speed.

tried doing "pwmconfig" and it did noting, continues with trying to install and use fancontrol and coolero.

both of them seemed to allow setting curves for my fans, but after pressing apply, noting changes with the fans speed.

just to clarify, the fans are so noisy, thats this will probably be a deal breaker for me, if i cant get this fixed, unfortunately 😞

notes:

1. i tried setting fan curve in bios, as soon as i get into linux, it overrides the bios settings.

2. in windows, i used "fan control" and it works great.

Other issue, if anyone knows, my mouse becomes huge and turn back to normal (with animation, like it a feature, not a bug) at random times, maybe its like a find my cursor feature, but i cant find the setting for it.

It seems the community is still trying to figure out how these  it86/it87xxx sensors work, issue is not only your board model but other gigabyte models too. Support thread for your board in particular  is here

https://github.com/frankcrawford/it87/issues/15

Seems to be a lone dev trying to figure this out on their own time.

Unloading the it87 module should regain bios control, if not voltage control at best.

If only hardware manufactures gave first party support to linux. 🥺

THANKS! it seemed to work, deleting the module, gave bios control, still kinda sucks but ok.

You can try CoolerControl and CoreCtrl to see if you can set it like this. Both are GUI apps for setting fan speeds among other things.

tried those, same thing.

completely different issue, i wanted to see my nvidia settings and this is what i get:

it seems the driver is installed, but i cant see the settings, any idea?

found this:

didnt really help much, unless this just cant be done on wayland?

sorry for all the noob questions lol, i really want to give linux a shot.

I have Gigabyte B650 AORUS ELITE AX with 7700 and I have been playing with fans for a while until a point when I decided to set everything in BIOS, then I just saved settings and restore from file every time I am doing BIOS upgrade.

Works like a charm, no issues. I have 2 front fans connected via case splitter to one of the motherboard ports, 2 CPU fans to another via noctual splitter, and third in the back to third port. Also running Fedora 40 based OS - Nobara, I do not have anything installed for fan control right now. It was also working fine at the time when I have configured it while Mint was on it.
