Budget (including currency): $1750ish CAD

Country: BC, Canada

First and foremost this is a gaming rig.  Some sample games:  Elden Ring, Satisfactory, Valheim, Total Warhammer III, ArmA 3.

Why the build: This is a replacement for my long-suffering Q6600, which has served me well for literally an entire decade, and should be retired to a farm in the fraser valley.  In some games these days my RTX 3070 is bottlenecked at 20% usage or lower, with all four CPU cores screaming and straining at 100%.  Also 16GB isn't enough RAM any more.

I'll be keeping my input and output peripherals, including a 3440x1440 120Hz primary monitor, and I'll also keep my RTX 3070 for now, though I'll probably try to upgrade that *substantially* in about a year, maybe to a 5080 when they exist, something along those lines.

A few comments:

  • no RGB please
  • RAM
    • I know that 32GB is the sweet-spot amount of RAM, but I want more than that, and I didn't want to screw around with 48GB, so that means it's 64GB
    • given that I'm buying 64GB of RAM, any other recommendations here?  My current criteria are: (a) 64GB DDR5-6000-cl30 (b) reputable brand, which I decided meant Kingston / Corsair / GSkill, but idk if that's right
  • Case
    • I want my case to be boring in appearance, with a solid side panel (no glass!!).
    • ideally I'd like USB C 3.2 Gen2 in the front panel too, and for that matter I'd like the front panel on the *front* rather than the top, but the Pure Base 500 seems like a great deal for great quality
    • magnetic removable dust filters: are they as great as they sound?
  • Motherboard
    • I'll probably avoid my next motherboard upgrade too long again this time (maybe not 10 years, but probably 6+), so PCIe 5.0 for the GPU is probably the right call, even if it's not relevant for my current card nor my next card...  but I think it WILL be relevant for the card I buy in 3-5 years (2.5 nvidia generations from now).
    • by a similar argument I'd like PCIe 5.0 for my primary NVMe, but not enough to pay a lot for the privilege
    • also for longevity, I tried to restrict myself to boards with relatively decent power regulation.
    • the motherboard is my biggest question mark, though
  • Cooler:
    • it looks like the PS120 is at least $20 more than the PA120 locally at this time, so it seemed like not worth the trouble?  I always feel so unsure about the cost/benefit tradeoff of non-stock coolers.
    • I'm sticking to air, btw, no water cooling, I just don't need the anxiety
  • PSU
    • the PSU is *definitely* overkill for the present, I know.  But I felt like the 850x would be a little close to the line in the future, assuming I do buy a 4090 or a 5080 in a year or so.  Is this silly?  I do always think the PSU is the second-most important place to pay for quality (after the storage).
    • speaking of which, aside from wattage, is the 850x / 1000x a good choice?
  • Merchant
    • I've definitely been warned away from Vuugo.  Other than that, I guess I'd just buy piecemeal.  Any advice?

Thanks in advance!

You want a ATX 3.0 psu if you plan on going with a newer Nvidia card in the future and you can save a few dollars on the SSD. Example:

I'd change some parts :

mobo : cheaper B650 board but still good plus Wifi :Gigabyte B650 GAMING X AX V2 240 (50 saved) for example

32GB of Ram is enough for gaming, for a while. Except if you plan on playing the new Micros Flight Sim.

I'd get a 4TB storage instead, for example

The 1000W psu is way overpowered... 750W (or 850W depending on price) will power almost anything you throw on that very good 7800x3d

(I see now that I, like often, didn't read your whole post. 32GB isn't the sweet spot, it's more than enough for 95% of people or more)
