Why do Reference Coolers Suck?

AMD and Nvidia should spend a little more money implementing something that works well.

Its supposed to be the cheap option and if you want to spend more you get an aftermarket one. also thats why evga does the asx version and stuff

Not really, amd are half-arsed to put a dual asetek pump and rad combo on the R9 295X. Piece of crap in my opinion.

The nvidia GTX 690/770/780/780ti/titan/titan black/titan z look like decent stock coolers.

But the ACX and stuff is cheaper than the reference... (At least for a 780)

The name reference, it's so other companies can take that card to make their own cooler to make the card run cooler. While still giving you the option to get the reference cooler. AMD and nvidia would waste money putting on those coolers, and leaving other companies to add their features and make money off of them.

the newer 700s nvidia coolers don't suck and work very well. Maybe a little loud but nothing I can't handle.

Nvidia's stock ones are pretty good now (and they look really nice), but the ones AMD shipped out with the 290/290X sucked ass.

The windforce card is normally the cheapest card in australia because its almost impossible to get a stock cooler

Well for one thing I actually do like the R9 290X/290/280X/270X coolers just wished they were made of metal.

Not all of them suck I just don't appreciate that they could've done better.

They do, but other companies can cool them down effectively.

Still not as cool as nvidia but ye they need some work

NVIDIA's TITAN cooler was decent, the blower-style fan was a good addition.

 

I've never seen a reference cooler with two fans even if it is high-end like a GTX 780 Ti or R9 290X. Which surprises me considering how much heat the latter puts out.

It actually was the stock coolers, once you put a custom cooler on a 290 it runs pretty good, but you could cook your dinner with the stock cooler.
