First/second display for new build

As much as I would very much be eager to go LG after the experience I have had with my TV, they don't make a 360hz OLED currently so that is giving me pause. That is why I am mostly looking at the MSI/GIGABYTE displays although I know AW also makes a display with the same panel, there just seemed to be more other options with the other manufacturers.

As far as resolution, I'm guessing you would recommend both at 1440p rather than one at 1080p?

To be fair, the difference between 240Hz and 360Hz is rather small to begin with, and only noticeable if you can hit the higher FPS in your games anyway.

1440p will play nicer with your future monitor, but most of the good 1440p monitors also support 4K input from consoles and then downscale internally for better picture quality compared to a 1080p input.

So I will soon be building my first PC. Haven't had a PC in over a decade despite using one for work so I am excited to build my own rig finally but this does mean that I'm starting from nothing and that the entrance cost is very high so considering how to get the most performance for what I can afford.

One of the things I am considering is monitors. I currently play games on my PS5 using a 65" LG C1 OLED. I love the OLED and want to get myself an OLED monitor but due to budget constraints, that will have to wait a while after building my rig so for a while I will only have 1 monitor which will then become my second display. I am going back to university to study software engineering so 2 displays will be a must for productivity in the long run.

I have decided that I will go for 2 27" monitors, with the OLED seeming likely to be either the MPG 271QRX or the AORUS FO27Q3 as I have my heart set on a 360Hz 1440p panel. From looking at both on RTINGS, the MSI appears to have some issues with gaming at lower refresh rates which will be important if I want to use my PS5 on it so if anyone has any experience of this or knows how it might compare to my C1, that would be great.

But the real issue is wanting to get the other monitor now. I want the two to be as similar as possible when I have the 2 so was looking to purchase a monitor from the same brand as the OLED I will get so the monitor I choose now will affect the OLED choice massively. I wanted to know if anyone thinks it would be better to get a 1440p/144hz monitor as my second display or a 1080p panel as it will only be used for side applications and productivity so not sure how much the extra resolution would make a difference. Obviously the 1080p display will be around 30-40% cheaper from quick searches so it will be far from an insignificant decision.

Would love to see what you guys think and if you have any recommendations for specific monitors to have as my second display then let me know.

EDIT: Should probably provide more context, the PC will be a 14700K/4080 Super build, for games I mainly play Rocket League, Trackmania, BG3, Destiny 2 and then other games here and there. Any other questions then please let me know 🙂

I'd recommend shooting for one 34'er OLED, or better yet, waiting out for the 5k2k ultrawide OLEDs with bigger estate / res. Dual 27 inchers seem bit eh to me. Always prefer single large monitor over two smaller ones.

Reason I wanted to have two monitors was so I could have one display with more static elements where I can minimise the risk of OLED burn in and also there's something in my brain where I prefer my windows to be the full screen rather than half of a larger screen, even if both were the same screen area.

I have the same thing. I just prefer to work in fullscreen apps. Idk why, but I do. Even on my massive 42" monitor, I don't use corner snapping etc.

I'll always happily recommend LG. While they don't always offer the best-in-class performance in some areas, they always are up there and have the best firmware support on top of that. Rarely do they ever have bugs, and if they have any, they're pretty much always gonna get fixed. My LG C9 from 2019 still gets new firmware updates, new features and updates for the internal streaming apps such as YouTube, Netflix and so on.

Get something like the LG 27GP83B-B or 27GP850-B IPS now and then get the 27GR95QE-B or 27GS95QE-B OLED later for example. The IPS model isn't so expensive, so you won't spend a huge amount on a monitor that is just going to be the secondary display in some time. And the OLED model offers good performance and is among the cheaper 27" OLED monitors.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.

To be fair, the difference between 240Hz and 360Hz is rather small to begin with, and only noticeable if you can hit the higher FPS in your games anyway.

Then 1440p it is, that's at least that decision made.

As for 360hz, I would like to think that a 4080S will be able to exceed 240Hz in quite a few of the games I play which is where 360Hz would be a nice bonus and the price doesn't seem that much different so won't cost much extra. But knowing that the 1440p monitors could downscale the 4K input, I'll definitely look into it and potentially use it to inform my monitor choice now and then follow suit with the OLED later.
