TP link, netgear, linksys

There is nothing special about them. I would say be careful not to get a 100 mbit model, but I don't even see any on amazon. I guess watch out for that if you're buying used. And this is definitely something I would look for used in FBMP or CL.

Do you have any models in mind? What do you use ?

I have one from every brand I listed. They all look slightly different and function exactly the same.

What do you recommend ?

Price range?

Brands to explore, not necessarily your best option, are, in no particular order: Netgear, TP-link, Microtik, Ubiquity, Dell, HP.

I would say 200 bucks and as long as they are feature packed that's not a problem .

I think you are looking for more from this product than it offers lol

What is your plan with this device? Do you have a managed switch upstream that is going to tag VLANs to its ports? Do you need to control VLANs with this switch? Are you just trying to connect up to 15 more devices in a closet somewhere for your home network and be done with it?

These are not very complicated or feature rich devices unless you have prosumer/enterprise needs.

I am certainly going to plug a lot of devices. I need features like data, bandwith and traffic control, VPN capability, VLAN and security.

new or second hand?

also, 16 port gigabit is very affordable, even for managed switches.

that's not something your switch does.

I am looking for new. The question is which switch model and brand?

The VPN part is about the router providing VPN capability over a number of devices on the network

literally just sorted by price on a network gear retailer..

TP-Link TL-SG1016DE

just make sure not to confuse yourself with the TL-SG1016D, which is not managed.

Bear in mind there are managed switches and smart switches, the latter has a lot of the managed functionality like VLANs without going full managed.

Also are you sure you need things like bandwidth/traffic control?  It sounds like a lot of things you are talking about are more tasks for your router.  You only need to do traffic control on the switch if you're absolutely hammering it in some way, its more for enterprise where you might want to prioritise mission critical LAN to LAN traffic over generic traffic.

That's true while I look for a switch, TP Link for example offers smart switches, however it does not really explain what that means .

What do I get between a smart and a fully managed switch ?

Right now I use a TP-Link EX220 as a router and a ZTE ZXHN F670LZTE as a router/modem in bridge mode. You can check more on my idea of getting rid of my ZTE in exchange for an SFP transceiver Here, however that's a complicated issue on its own. I purchased a Netgate PfSense 2100, but I still didn't receive it yet, so I am not sure if my router is up to the task. How do you define mission-critical operations, for example ?

What do you use and recommend, like brand and model ?

I think part of it is a fully managed wont necessarily have a WebUI, its expected you really know what you're doing.  It likely differs a lot between different manufacturers.

I know Netgear specifically have two tiers of Smart Managed switches:

Quote

Smart Managed Plus switches make an ideal upgrade from Unmanaged switches, with easy-to-use web browser-based management GUI, and essential Layer 2 switching features including VLAN, QoS, Multicast and Link Aggregation.

Smart Managed Pro switches provide even more features, with Access Control Lists, Spanning Tree and SNMP that you won't find on Plus versions. Often with IPv4/IPv6 Layer 3 Static Routing, the Pro versions bring more enterprise-class networking to budget-aware SMBs.

They're the only ones I've used personally.

I would suggest getting a switch with at least two SPF+ ports - it's doable in that budget of 200$

That would allow you to connect one or two devices with 10gbps network cards (a NAS and a main computer for example)

Besides those brands mentioned there's also Trendnet which has decent switches, there's QNAP with some interesting designs (with mixes of RJ45/SPF/SPF+ ports)

65$ (plain 16 gigabit ports) : Amazon.com: TRENDnet - TEG-S16DG 16-Port Unmanaged Gigabit GREENnet Desktop Metal Switch, TEG-S16DG, Ethernet Splitter, Ethernet/Network Switch, 16 x 10/100/1000 RJ-45 Ports, 32 Gbps Forwarding Capacity, Lifetime Protection Black : Electronics

70$ (smaller size) : Amazon.com: TRENDnet 16-Port Gigabit Desktop Switch, TEG-S17D, 16 x Gigabit RJ-45 Ports, 32Gbps Switching Capacity, Fanless Design, Metal Enclosure, Internal Power Supply, Lifetime Protection, Black : Electronics

85$ for 24 ports: Amazon.com: TRENDnet 24-Port Unmanaged Gigabit GREENnet Desktop Switch, Ethernet Network Switch, 24 x 10-100-1000 Gigabit Ethernet RJ-45 Ports, 48Gbps Switching Capacity, Lifetime Protection, Black, TEG-S24DG : Electronics

Plain 16 ports ... you have

tp-link at 58$ (28% off) : Amazon.com: TP-Link 16 Port Gigabit Ethernet Network Switch, Desktop/ Wall-Mount, Fanless, Sturdy Metal w/ Shielded Ports, Traffic Optimization, Unmanaged (TL-SG116) Black : Electronics

Netgear switch at $90 : Amazon.com: NETGEAR 16-Port Gigabit Ethernet Unmanaged Switch (GS116NA) - Desktop or Wall Mount, and Limited Lifetime Protection : Electronics

or you can get 24 port switch for same money from Netgear, or 85-90$ from tp-link

Amazon.com: NETGEAR 24-Port Gigabit Ethernet Unmanaged Switch (GS324) - Desktop, Wall, or Rackmount, Silent Operation : Electronics

Amazon.com: TP-Link 24 Port Gigabit Ethernet Switch Desktop/ Rackmount Plug & Play Shielded Ports Sturdy Metal Fanless Quiet Traffic Optimization Unmanaged (TL-SG1024S) : Electronics

Amazon.com: TP-Link 24 Port Gigabit Switch Easy Smart Managed Plug & Play Desktop/Rackmount Sturdy Metal w/ Shielded Ports Support QoS, Vlan, IGMP & LAG (TL-SG1024DE),Black : Electronics

If you don't mind used, 99$ gets you a switch with 24 gigabit and 2 SFP+ (10 gbps) ports : 24 Port 1GB RJ45 Edge-Core Accton ECS4510 Switch Ethernet 1x PSU | 2x 10GB SFP+ | eBay
