Source on this? Someone recreated the LTT screwdriver using a 3D printer, but I havent heard anything about LTT making a metal one using a 3D printing process.

IIRC they made at least some handles on the fancy metal 3D printer they've got, but for the life of me I can't find that video.

A viewer made some all-metal replica Screwdrivers and sent them in a few months ago. (They're custom-machined handles with Makita ratchet mechanisms inside.)

I sold my soul for ProSupport.

I remember in a video there was a metal 3d printer cameo that they pulled a screwdriver handle out of and linus made the comment about making them later and selling them but I don't remember which video

IIRC they said they might sell the 1/2 they made for charity? Actually manufacturing a series of them they'd likely cost a couple of thousands each...

They did during last charity stream.

And the only 3D printed one that comes to my mind is the 3x scale one from stream some time ago.

Might have been a FP exclusive? I managed to find one on there around the same time as this showing off the preliminary sintering process they were doing for the handles.

*IF* something like their prototype does come to market, it will be

  • In extremely limited quantities
  • *very* expensive ($500 would probably be a "good" deal, it will likely be more)
  • May have some sort of exclusivity list of purchasers who get first access to this "premium" level product.

I'm an owner of one of their retro versions. I'd definitely want a 3D printed metal version too, though I'm not sure I could afford the price tag.

I would pay for the metal ones even if they were pricy. The work I do is very hard on most things. I've actually shattered bits on a couple occasions. So having such a quality screwdriver that's made out of metal would be amazing.

Are you breaking handles? Or bits? Paying $1000 for a metal handle probably isn't going to make a noticeable difference in the durability of your screwdriver unless its getting abused.

Bits. Things do get abused as well as stressed. I put a lot of effort into keeping my stuff nice and yet I've still managed to rip the handle off of a solid cast homedepot screwdriver even if I did cram it back on

If that's the case, the quality and durability you'd get out of a metal screwdriver would be the same as their existing one give that the shaft, ratcheting mechanism, and collar are nearly identical and would likely suffer from similar failure points.

For reference, there's already been a study on bit strength done here.

My advice is simply to be mindful of the fact that this screwdriver will likely not be a stronger version of the original. If that's your intended goal, you'll likely end up disappointed with your theoretical purchase.

Yes I watched LTT's video on their construction however ratcheting drivers are always inherently weaker just due to physics and in their video they talked about the construction of their bits as well. The metal handle would be more durable in the case of *ahem* accidents or other people grabbing my tool without me knowing and using it more aggressively than I would. As a bonus the money goes to LTT who I support so I have nothing stopping me from the higher price other than my income.

Cheaper than one might assume.

3D-printed blanks. I would estimate $30.

Baisc subtractive machining for the critical dimensions and surface finishes (2D and two setups and custom jigs for workpiece holding). Likely under $10 each.

Polishing: Also cheap.

Assuming decent order numbers they could hit a $300  resell price point on this product.

People never go out of business.

They didn’t make this to sell. It was part of a charity livestream and was a prototype.
