I have old spare computer parts lying around, this includes a i7 9700k, 16 gb ram, motherboard, and ssds. I want to give these parts a purpose and set up a home nas/plex/game server if that's possible, games would include: minecraft, palworld, etc. I have a question on what other hardware/software i would need like if i need to buy a used graphics card or if anyone could include a list of requirements or a video link that would be helpful

Don't need a GPU; if you're doing any hardware transcoding, it will use the CPU's quicksync feature.

Software depends on what you're comfortable with. My server computer runs Truenas and then Plex/game servers in containers.

You can just as easily run windows for this, and it may be simpler that way

Okay thank you but I can run a plex/NAS +game servers on the system just fine without a gpu? Or can I not run those together?

Correct. You don’t need a GPU for a server unless you have a specific need for one. In your case you don’t.

Your 9700k has a GPU in it, which if you need to transcode for plex, that iGPU will handle just fine.

Okay so it turns out the motherboard I had for the 9700k doesnt have a video output on it so I can't use integrated graphics, which gpus should i be looking at for performance benefits for game server hosting? I was looking at getting a card like an rx 480 or gtx 1060 as i can buy those locally for ~50 dollars, what gpus would you recommend?

A game server will not use a GPU at all…

They make mobo’s for 9th gen that don’t have video out? I have not seen a consumer board without video out in quite a while, seeing as basically all chips have iGPU’s these days. Your sure it doesn’t have video out?

Id buy the cheapest GPU you can find, and I would go Nvidia for better driver support in server applications in general. A 1060 for 50 bucks would be fine.

Its a proprietary Asus ROG board from a prebuilt, I hadn't checked the io beforehand

Are you sure its a ROG board? Does it have a ROG BIOS?

I've never heard of Asus supplying proprietary Republic of Gamers boards to SIC's.

Is there a model number on it?

Just further to the discussion RE: iGPU;

- You only need a Video Out if you intend to plug in a monitor. If it still has the BIOS to initialize the GPU then it can still be used since I assume you're running the server headless. You can temporarily install a GPU for the OS install and/or configuration

- CoffeeLake CPU's are QuickSync v6...its probably not an issue; but just an FYI that it won't decode AV1 or HEVC 12-bit; so it will fall back into Software Decoding for those.

Yes it has the "asus rog gl12cx main board" printed on it; Yeah I'll probably end up buying a gtx 1060 just to have ease of use. I was planning to use the igpu just no motherboard output

Oh right its from an actual Asus system. Sorry misunderstood; thought it had come out of some boutique build by an SIC.

Also do you recommend any windows remote controlling software? I saw LTT used pulseway in the video Emily did but I don't think they're free anymore, any alternatives?

If you want to be able to access it from anywhere through a browser; check out Guacamole. It's a self hosted application and its a webserver that acts as an RDP Gateway to all your machines; so you can access more than 1 machine via it. It can be run via Docker; so you could install it in Docker for Windows with WSL2
