A bit confused

Go to solution Solved by Guest,

In comes the swarm of people to scream and say sound cards are irrelevant because of two videos.

Oh brother.

OP, a soundcard has an amp on it.

Don't really. like the look of it, and that's important since it's gonna be on my desk.

Can I pair the HD 650 with the Vali and Loki? It's in my budget so...

Sure. Some would argue that it isn't necessarily an upgrade from the HD 600, though.

Why not? Should I save my money?

EDIT: Could I go with HD 650s (if that's a thing) or HD 700s with those DAC and Amp?

None are really better or worse than the others, they just sound different. 650 has more bass and 700 has more treble.

Great! I listen to a lot of bass heavy music like dubstep

If you want a more bass-oriented headphone you might look at the Beyerdynamic DT 990. Or the Nad viso hp50.

I listen to a lot of stuff but slightly more dubstep. I prefer better overall than especially good on bass

Sennheiser HD 650 isn't really known for bass.

Sure it is. While it doesn't have extreme bass response, the treble is notably rolled off. Certainly isn't "neutral" like the HD600

Thanks for all the advice everyone! I've decided on the Vali and Loki. Cheaper than what I was originally gonna spend and still great, with room for upgrade!

Meh I stay away from schiit because they are a shit company. The old asgard was killing headphones and they tried to cover it up. O2 is better.

Actually I found that for a good quality bass, go with planar headphones. They differ from brands and types, in term of frequency response, of course. Some got more bass, other got less bass, but from what I've tried (HE400, LCD2, T50RP original and modded), regardless of the amount, the quality of the bass is superb. It's punchy, dense, good fall-off. I got good sounds with techno musics from the HE400...

That is actually the first thing I noticed about my modded fostex. There's no going back now. Although my K612 are still pretty good.

The HD600 is near-perfectly neutral from 100hz up, but is a good 5-10db (depending on which curve you use) down at 60hz.

The HD650 extends right down to 40hz and is a few db down by 20hz, unfortunately it's treble is down a few db as otherwise that would have been a perfect evolution of the HD600.

Both are generally seen as equals for differing tastes. If midrange and treble neutrality is your bag, and don't mind a slightly bass-light sound, go for the HD600. If you don't mind a slightly relaxed, smooth but attenuated treble response, and want better bass extension, the HD650 is the better choice.

Both great headphones though.

Generally this is true. There are some recent closed back headphones that do exceptionally clean, punchy bass - the Focal Spirit Pro, Focal Spirit Classic and NAD Visio HP50 - which extend better and with more authority than the cheaper orthos such as the T50RP. That said, the better orthos (LCD family, HE500, HE6 etc) do offer some of the best bass punch and weight out there.

The Electrostatic headphones from Stax offer insanely clean and detailed bass that extends right down to 20hz as well, although they do lack the body and punch of orthos. Personally I would still take the Stax as the bass sounds more natural and real to me.

thanks! I think from what I said I might want the 650s.
