Updating BIOS for CPU

Hi guys,

I'm currently building a PC and have a question. In PC Part Picker, it says, ".....Motherboard supports the AMD Ryzen 5 5600 3.5 GHz 6-Core Processor with BIOS version F14." My question is, am I able to update the BIOS while the incompatible CPU is installed, or would I need to get another CPU to update the BIOS and then switch it back? How does it work?

Just dont want to f anything up😂

Any help is appreciated

I bought that same motherboard 2 years ago, and it was already updated out of the box for my 5600 at the time. If you're buying new, it should almost certainly have the proper BIOS installed. The box said something along the lines of "Ryzen 5000 ready" on it too, so with any luck you can confirm ahead of time (depending on where you're buying).

But otherwise, yes, I'm quite sure that motherboard has to have a supported CPU installed to update.

Edit: If you're buying from the Amazon link in the PC Part Picker page you provided, the listing says it supports 5000 series so you should be good to go!

Don't buy into AM4 at this date, it's a dead platform. At least shoot for LGA 1700, you can probably find the 12400F for cheap, and it's a better choice in various ways.

tbh i think am4 is fine for the right price, obv because its a dead end platform you should get it cheaper. But the ryzen 5000 CPUs can still kick ass.

1700 is better in the long term tho

They're OK, I wouldn't say kick ass because my 7500F gets lower CPU time than my 5900X. I've had lots of AM4 CPUs ever since the dawn of the platform, it was the best back in its prime, but those days are gone. I wouldn't purchase it now for a custom PC, there's no point.

Indeed with LGA 1700 there would still be upgradeability route, and the CPU does outperform it anyway.

Longevity is not an argument that works for LGA 1700 against AM4 because

a) we don't have official confirmation that it's going to get next gen CPUs (this is the first time in recent years for Intel to not cut compatibility after 2 generations of CPUs)

b) 13th and 14th gen have lifespan issues as of now and we don't know what the final performance after all the fixes are applied will be.

c) 13th and 14th gen don't provide much performance improvement over 12th gen as is, historically all Intel's fixes hurt performance.

Since AM5 doesnt have budget budget options yet, currently going cheap means only looking at what's already up on the market.

+1

Anyone recommending an Intel platform today must have lived under a rock the last few weeks. At minimum wait till Intel actually resolved the issue for future CPU and pulls all the faulty CPU off the market. And by resolved I mean that reputable experts and media agree it actually is resolved.

And by the time they fixed that and replaced every CPU with a good one, they will be on a new socket anyway.
