True Gamer???

Go to solution Solved by ttam,

True Gamer would be mainly the pro e-sport guys. They live eat sleep breathe the games. The other hand of this is the guy with a huge list of steam games that near all has hundreds of hours. He thoroughly plays them all. Plays it on different modes, plays the game over to take a different path for each game.. This is not attained by many. The guy with 1000 hours played on 5 90s in WoW or the guy with 9,000 League games played in Ranked.

Enthusiast Gamer would be the guy that waits for the new games to come out, buys them and devotes a good chunk of time to them. He also puts in decent time to other games and enjoys to game with his free time. Doesn't have the crazy played hours in games.

A Gamer would be where the majority of people sit. They buy games and play them but don't really progress that far. Their free time isn't all games but they play here and there. Being a gamer has become such a loose term these days that everyone thinks they are such a hardcore gamer.

Wannabe Gamer  Well.. This goes to Minecraft players. I put console gamers above PC minecraft players.

someone who enjoys games doesn't have to play them 24/7

find a game you enjoy and enjoy it for as long as you can

doesn't matter if its a pc or a console gaming is gaming nor does it matter what type of game it is

True Gamer - People that devote a solid chunk of their time to one game OR thoroughly play many games. These would be the pro e-sport guys who dedicate so much to the games. The other hand is the guy with 300 steam games and most of them have hundreds of hours to the game. This is not attained by many.

Enthusiast Gamer - The people who buy the games, play them to an extent. Spend a lot of time playing a variety of games. May not finish them all but he damn well tries but gets bored and ventures over to a new game. Gets excited over new games, flips around from BF4 to League to WoW to Warframe and so on.

Gamer - People that enjoy playing video games. Get the latest games, play them but doesn't spend all their free time on them.

Wannabe - Well.. This goes to Minecraft players. I put console gamers above PC minecraft players.

that is what i am talking about.....

I have a small problem with defining a gamer, as someone who just play games. Nobody would call me a ´watcher´ becuase I like movies, or a ´Reader´ becuase I like books. Why do we then need to create a seperate group for people who play games, I.E. ´gamer´. It can't be because games are a smaller, more underground market than movies or books. The video game industry had a revenue of $93 billion in 2013, while the movie industry had revenue of about $95 billion, os they are really close to eachother. And GTA V earned $1 billion in two days less then it took Avatar. So I don't think it makes sense to create a group (Gamer(s)) just for people who play games, since ´gamers´ would be such a large group, that we might aswell call it ´people´.

Is a gamer then somebody who plays a lot of games? While some people might put people into groups based on their consumption of a given media, I still don't think that makes sense. I don't think a persons consumption of a media reflects their appreciation of the media. While we might call a person that see a lot of movies ´a movie buff´ (Thereby we create a seperate category for the person), does the fact that the person watch a lot of movies, make him appreciate the media?

Especially with books this comes apparent. I know a lot of people that read a lot more then I do, yet if I were to ask them of a literary analysis of a book, they would probably not be able to fo it. This is becuase there is a big difference between seeing something as entertainment and seeing something as an art form.

And this leads me to my definition of a ´Gamer´. A ´gamer´ is somebody that can see games as more then just entertainment. A gamer can see games as an art form. If you are able to look at a game and analyse the themes of the story, see the reasons why the soundtrack is like it is and appreciate the artstyle of the graphics  Maybe you would even be able to see the game in a historical context.

I would also only call a person a ´movie buff´ if the person was able to analyse the movie, and see the reasons why the movie is like it is.

This is just my personal take on the question.

Playing 100 different champions in a game vs adult legos.. That's a huge difference.

True, but that doesn't change my opinion on the game. But everyone thinks differently. :) Like i play a lot of CS:GO and some people might think that it sucks, but i think it's really immersive and competitive.

"True" Gamer. True is a toutology.  What defines different kinds of gamers is stuff like duration, competitiveness, variety of games, etc...

And you are overcomplicating everything xD

There isnt a hard line dividing people who play games and someone who is gamer.

So >>my<< definition of gamer is someone who play games regularly.

So is LoL in ranked games once you get higher up.  The Korean ranked games are taken EXTREMELY seriously, as that's the only way to get noticed by a professional team.

as i may agree with this no matter or stretch of time can prove your a pro gamer. take me for example im admittedly a casual hovering around playing all kinds of games take dark souls 1. i have been handing around the twitch "community" prior to pc release and most of you who know the game well will know the game was broken as hell but i enjoyed it thats why i managed to hold out for the 3 years through all the hackers and issues. i enjoyed playing it i have around 3000~ or so in it taking part in thousands of competitions and by no means am i some pro nor do i desire to be one

I have honestly tried to get into LoL because everyone made it seem so good. It's just too boring and uniform for me. Some might say the same about CS but hey, different opinions again.

I don't put Minecraft in any high category because it doesn't offer anything skill based. Artistic, sure..

after reading that i would consider myself an enthusiast gamer, but whats all the hate on minecraft? Its not a bad game, in fact it is actually very addicting.

I run my own indie game company called Color Dragon Studios where we are currently making a 2d platformer game called Small Earth.
