It doesn't technically have to be the same speed, but mixing kits is generally not recommended for a variety of reasons. Still, your Memory/DRAM would all run at the speed of whatever the slowest module is. Just keep in mind you can't mix different generations of memory, which I'm sure you are aware.

If that's the situation, it being for aesthetic reasons, simply try to get the same kit you have currently then (identical model and SKU). This should assist in avoiding compatibility issues. Also, will probably look the best if it's an exact mirror to what you presently have in your system. As mixing different brands usually doesn't look all that appealing.

no i mean the same brand and sticks just different speeds so i dont have to spend as much

If i wanted to get another kit of ram does it have to be the same speeds as the one i already have in my pc?

nope

doesnt matter if its a diff speed or the same speed its still generic xmp sticks so still completely random ics regardless even if you buy the same type of heatspreader

for ddr4 the only valid speeds for set and forget xmp are 3200c16 or 3600c18 as everything else are oc bins (3200/3600c14 bdie, 4400+ djr/rev e) or dont make a difference while ripping you off (3600c16 non bdie), so yeah anything from trash samsung c die to decent hynix djr or micron rev e

for ddr5 buy a 6400c32 kit and up and its guaranteed hynix a die, though you dont wanna run quad stick on ddr5 unless you have a z790 classified or any other board thats actually good at clocking 4 stick

you can circumvent getting random ics if you buy crucial or klevv either in bare pcb or heatspreader form or you can buy oem green pcbs where a specific part number will get you the exact same ic every single time (ex 16gb hma82gu6djr8n for double sided 8gbit hynix djr) in that case you are free to run 4 stick without any concerns of compatibility just that youll probably need to adjust your oc settings abit especially if its quad rank though kinda useless for ddr5 atm since 6400c32 is a pretty common bin and it isnt particularly expensive unless you manage to get a sizable discount on those hynix/klevv 5600c46 sticks and also you just dont wanna run quad stick on ddr5

Spoiler

also just so happens to be an overclockers trick to getting cheap rams thatll oc well just that if you are shooting for high freq or do max frequency runs youll need to do some binning but this is pretty irrelevant if you do <200% or <150% overclocks, these ics (1gbit gdie) are rare on heatspreader sticks (usually better pcb) so im kinda stuck to binning these sticks

though if you are doing this for aesthetic reasons probably dont want bare pcbs, usually some ram manufacturers sell dummy rgb sticks to fill the other slots so might wanna buy one of those

or if you happen to be on am5 get a b650m hdv or any other 2dimmer board

If it's the same everything except the frequency, it will work. But it will default to the slowest speed. Which means you will lose performance unless you get them all stable at the same frequency.

What is the kit you currently have and what were you planning on buying? For instance, if you have a 3600 MT/s kit now, and buy a 3200 MT/s kit, chances are you can get them all stable at 3600 MT/s or even if you default to 3200 MT/s you won't be losing that much performance. But if you are running say a 3600 MT/s kit and are trying to save money by getting something much slower, say 2800 MT/s, then you might have some problems getting all kits running at the fastest possible speed.

I have run mixed sets on Intel and AMD, usually with no problem. Sometimes with lots of problems.. depends on what you try to run.

Just make sure you clear the CMOS first before you change you're configuration.

AMD R9 9900X | Thermalright FW Pro Black, 3x TL-B12E | Asus Strix X670E -F | 64GB G.Skill 6000C26
Zotac 4070 Ti Trinity OC | WD SN850, SN850X, 2x SN770 | Seasonic Vertex GX-1000 | ProArt PA602

corsair dominator platinum 5600mhz, however i sometimes see online that some of the faster speeds are slightly cheaper.

Be aware that running 4 sticks is harder than two. There is a solid chance that you will not get it to run as fast as two sticks, so you are essentially throwing performance away just so that it looks pretty.

As mentioned, running four sticks or all RAM slots populated will already strain the memory controller. So, even if the kit you get is faster, you probably won't be able to get them all stable at the fastest speed. Be prepared to run them all at the speed of the slowest sticks or possibly even slower.  Maybe with manual tuning, you can have success, but that's not guaranteed.
