New Gaming Rig for Work

Go to solution Solved by jtrier1,

Thanks I finally figured it out. The ITX prodigy can put a fan in the front so I was confused. I cant wait to order and build! I think I am going to try to squeeze a Blu-Ray drive in too!

Cool...glad I was able to help.

I am building a portable gaming rig to bring to work, the laptop is no longer cutting it. I have a Acer 23 inch 1080p monitor to use and my favorite mouse, Logitech G9X. I will be purchasing a replacement keyboard for my main rig at home (Ducky Shine 3) to replace my Razer Blackwidow Ultimate which I will use for my new work rig. The parts I want to use are as follows:

Case - BitFenix Prodigy M
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
Motherboard - Asus Maximus VII Gene
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
CPU - Intel Corei5 (PLACEHOLDER for new Devil's Canyon)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
Ram - Kingston HyperX Fury Red 16 GB (2 x 8GB)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
PSU - Seasonic ss 860 xp2
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
CPU Cooler - Corsair h90 OR
Noctua NH-C12
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
SSD - Samsung 840 Pro 256 GB
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA2W0...
Storage Drive Western Digital Scorpio Black 750 GB
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA0AT...

I also have a Asus Matrix GTX 580 that I will use until A. The new GeForce Maxwell card comes out, or B. I run out of patience. I have an Asus GTX 780TI DCuII in my main rig that I will put in my work rig if the new card comes out soonish or I will buy a new one for this rig then SLI both when I upgrade my main.

I have a few questions though -
1. Will the Noctua be better for a rig that is being dragged around daily or the Corsair cooler? I
2. I wish to put a 230mm fan on the bottom and in the front of the Prodigy M, will they both fit with the parts given?
3. Would there be room for an optical drive in the drive bay if I only used one GPU, I really want one to watch Blu-Ray at work. I will make due with an external if I have to but would rather not.
4. Should I stick with Windows 7 or go for 8.1?
5. Stick with the i5 or go i7?

6. Will this power supply fit?

Lastly I have nice headphones and a DAC to use for sound. Shure SE 535's.
Any other advice? Anyone use a similar build?
Thanks!

I am writing 3 papers right now so I can't get too in-depth... But if it going to move around a TON and you clearly aren't using much storage anyways, I would recommend a 500gb ssd then another 500gb ssd down the line or something like that, for the sake of being less susceptible to dying via being accidentally shaken.

Well that is why I figured a laptop drive, designed to be moved a lot. I also thought $100 extra and half the storage was inefficient.

Quad 295's in a prodigy m? Looking for something like I posted. I am having trouble finding how long power supplies and graphics cards and fans can be and fit in the prodigy m.

Oh I'm sorry I didn't read that it said Scorpio. In a tiny bit of a rush. Yeah nvm. I would still personally go that route and maybe RAID 0 them (since I do regular backups anyways) but it would be less storage for $!00 more.

Thanks but no evo, and I would have to take out the 3.5 inch drive cage. Would the140mm rad be too big for the rear exhaust? Also I have my heart set on a SeaSonic PSU as long as it will fit. You listed the black color Kingston ram at 1600, is this because the 1866 would not work with the board? If I was to use a 3.5 inch drive I prefer WD.

The RAM speed has no difference in gaming. 1600 is okay.

You want that is easy to bring? Or it's also upgradable (mITX) has 1 slot.

So are the closed loop coolers okay to move around daily? How important is the ram being on the QVL? That Microstar board is nice, but I have always gone with Asus. But it is a lot less expensive.
