Very Very Cheap VPS

HI.

I am thinking of looking for a a very very cheap vistual private server.

If it is behind a NAT, or ipv6 only, then that is fine.

512MB memory is about right.

KVM based - definitely.

Ubuntu 22.04 OS option.

The location - not too fussed.

No huge download limit needed.

Initial access to the machine  cli is needed initially - setup ssh securely.

Then install zeroteir, to allow access to it - connecting to the appropriate private network network.

Then pihole  & unbound with appropraite settings.

I will be using it for a DNS server for my phone & laptops when using public networks.

Suggestions?

Very very cheap is the most important thing.

Thanks.

Why not just connect to your home for this? It isn’t the fastest, but for DNS it should be fine. I run a split tunnel for my devices when I am out and about, spaniels going to a full tunnel depending on where and what network, and it’s always a fine experience.

I should get a affiliate code from EthernetServers at some point ....

EthernetServers special offer VPS. They made it worse (e.g. "only" 1 ipv4) but still a great offer at $1 per month.

People never go out of business.

Wow, nothing is only 1 dollar a month these days, that’s incredible.

Where is the $1 plan? The best I can see is $2.50 if you sign up for a three year contract.

I am doing that now, with an ubuntu servrer virtual machine.

It is for when the home internet is down.

Does that happen often enough to warrant this? My home internet goes down maybe 4-5 time a year…

My internet only going down 4-5 times a year. I wish!

I have my home server, running 24/7, with the VM I mentioned.

It is flakey when about 35C+. I was  at least in the summer that just finished. More  & faster fans  make little difference.

The very time I want to go to a air conditioned place and use free wifi, the server is flakey.

So if I can get a very very inexpensive VPS, seems the  best solution.

There should also be public adblocking DNS servers you can use. I'd try using those first and see if they meet your needs.

True, but you have little control over exactly what they block.
