Is it possible to fast charge via the usb ports on your motherboard?

For context, I have an MSI X-570 A pro gaming motherboard and was wondering if I could output 10W or more on any of the USB ports to my phone.

Yes, use the USB-C port on the rear I/O, it will charge faster than a normal USB-A. I charge my phone from the USB-C of my computer at work, faster than a normal 5w phone charger. Probably about 10w, like you wanted.

It should, but you may need to install MSI's software centre if its an Apple device.

With both front and rear USB C, my MSI X570S Torpedo Max fast charges my Galaxy A13 and Galaxy Tab S6 - though only if I use a good cable with the later (A13's cable isn't good enough).

Read the motherboard manual.  I know, nobody does that, but they often tell you about all the great stuff that makes it worth buying their less-than-low-end stuff.  🙂

Alternatively, after you install the OEM software that may be needed, get one of those $3 USB widgets that measures USB voltage and current, then you can see realtime, what it's doing.  Most significantly you would see a voltage jump to 9V or higher, depending on what both the mobo and client support.

This used to be feature specifically mentioned. So unless something has changed, PC USBs are still 5V, 1A. Whereas fast chargers are 2.4A. Also, USB-C is connector type and doesn't tell anything about other features. Other than what kind of cable you can put to it.

Manual for that mobo doesn't say anything special, so I'm assuming you aren't getting fast charging. What I suggest is to route charging cable from wall charger to where you want to charge the phone.

But 10w isn't considered fast charging.  It's faster but still slow.

Don't you need like 50w to be considered fast charging?   No motherboard has that as far as I know

I checked the manual for my board and it mentions nothing about power delivery, only data, passthrough and daisy chain capabilities.

Pulled up the manual for your board and mentioned nothing other than it being usb type C 3.2 gen 2

it would make sense if they could do 9v buuuttt

Quote

Please note the following: - USB 3.2 only defines the transfer rate of a product.

o USB 3.2 is not USB Type-C™, USB Standard-A, Micro-USB, or any other USB cable or connector.

o USB 3.2 is not USB Power Delivery or USB Battery Charging

I know when I plug my phone into the thunderbolt ports or type c 3.2 gen 1 on my PC it says "charging rapidly"
doesn't charge nearly as fast as a PD charger, but it's faster than a usb type A to C cable.
