Pc keeps rebooting after getting a gpu i suspect it might be the PSU

Lithuan1a
Go to solution Solved by Lithuan1a,

Just got a new power supply, it fixed the issue

So my pc specs are as follows:

Ryzen 5 5600g

NVIDIA GTX 1660 super

16GB ddr4 3200Mhz ram

PSU: CX500 Watts

B450 Tomahawk Max ii

Nvme m.2 SSD 500gb

Thats all the important things i can think of right now

So my situation is this:

Ive had this pc for around 1-2 years and i've been playing all this time with an APU Hence the 5600g and it worked perfectly fine and ive just now bought my gpu (from cex so it may have been used but looks in perfect condition as if it was out of the box) but everytime i get into a game it will either instantly reboot my pc or i can play for 20 minutes to an hour before it reboots, my max GPU Temp is around 70-80 but it has rebooted below that also.

(I also completely reset my pc to try and fix the issue but nothing worked)

I also used Heaven Benchmark to try and recreate it while logging the voltage with HWinfo and these are the voltages it recorded before shut down :

r/pchelp - Pc keeps rebooting after getting a gpu

at one point the +12V went down to only 12 for a good 20 seconds im not sure if thats bad or not if someone knows anything about Power supplies and would let me know if this is the issue it would be greatly appreciated. or if maybe you have had this in the past and know the fix.

If you would like the whole CSV File let me know ill send it.

Note: This PSU is around 6 or even more years old now as i took out my old PC

Thanks!

(My appologies if its stupid and obvious i dont really understand these numbers lol.)

Small voltage fluctuations like this don't have to mean anything.

@Somerandomtechyboi

When i first got the GPU it shut down once when playing a game and i was like "ok thats strange" so i completely wiped my pc as i needed to anyways when i did that i installed my AMD B450 Chipset driver and my Nvidia drivers and i downloaded Beamng just to play (i kept my pc on overnight to install it and it didnt restart)

when i first opened the game it just crashed my pc and rebooted and that kept happening a lot of times
i took out a stick of ram to see if it was maybe faulty and was causing the crashes and i was playing for like around an hour maybe before it crashed again so then i put the ram back into the pc and it crashed again after an hour and that kept happening a couple times i also used DDU To uninstall all drivers and reinstall them to see if that would fix anything (it didnt)
i changed the power cable going into the gpu (that didnt change anything)

i also took apart the pc thinking maybe the GPU wasnt going all the way into the  PCIe Slot (that also didnt change a thing) and that was about it,

i think i tried to do everything i could when i dont have any spare parts (except two ram sticks that i dont think work anymore)

i do have to note that on my last pc my GPU did just die out of nowhere and wouldnt boot with it in (so im not sure if the PSU just killed it or what)

Is the GPU second-hand?

Im not sure, it is from Cex which most of them are second hand but looks brand new to me since all games were running at very good framerate

how's the temps when gaming? or does it crash too fast, how long till game crashes?

It reaches like 70-80 max  after like 40Mins - 1 hour of playing before it crashes, when it crashes fast it would only be like 40-50.

you could try running the GPU on lower voltage and see if that helps

so while i was figuring out what my 1660 runs at it wouldnt even let me boot into the game to see the voltage and to benchmark it properly but i saw it was crashing at around 2000 Mhz so i just bumped it down to max be like 1950 and it would actually let me boot into the game without it crashing instantly, so i dont know what that means lol.

maybe it's the GPU and not the PSU then? it is the newest part and you only need like 400W PSU for it so 650W failing doesn't really add up

Its a 500 watt power supply thats more than 6 years old thats why i thought it couldve been the power supply

You could try getting a better PSU unit if you're planning on upgrading in the future anyway, but if you upgrade PSU and the crashes keep happening it must be GPU most certainly

gpu issue

return and get a replacement

what model?

send pic of the wattage table

cpu shouldnt be consuming >100w and the gpu probs not >150w so unless its a complete trash unit it should be fine, you can also use the igpu to verify if its a gpu issue

also 6 years is still well below a psus expected lifespan and definitely not old, 10 years bare minimum and id usually expect most units to hit the 12-15 year mark with higher quality ones probably around the 17 year mark if not more

also run stresstest like prime95 largeffts and furmark

btw psu swap is very cheap if you buy used with 850w rm(x) or equivalent going around 40-60£, should still last the next 7-10 years even if theyre 7yo

yeah i used my IGPU and it was working fine but i dont know how that would prove if its the power supply or not as it would draw less power im not sure.image.png.40081e8798cf10852ed7797ea441360a.png

Heres the table but yeah if its certainly the gpu ill get it replaced so far at 1950 mhz which also lowered the volts going into the gpu, and it hasnt crashed (also thanks for help i really appreciate it.)

456w psu due to 12v = 38a

meh unit but it should still be more than enough for a 5600g + 1660s so yeah id fault the gpu here

btw if you get a refund for the 1660s buy a used rx 5700(xt) instead as those have more vram and outperform a gtx 1080 whilst the 1660s is somewhere inbetween a 1060 6gb and a 1070

well i went to cex they checked it out and it didnt even boot for them, they gave me a replacement and its a ZOTAC gaming 1660 Super (was gonna get the 5700xt but they already sold it), literally never heard of that brand but i hope its fine. anyways works fine for now, i ran a benchmark and i ran the game that would usually crash instantly and it seems to be working fine if its still working fine by the end of the day i will mark it as my solution thanks guys!

i knew it, wasnt the gpu at all still does the same thing where it crashes like theres no way it does it twice in a row with a different gpu, has to be the power supply.
