USB A female to female adapter in combination with USB C to USB A cable doesn't work

If I had to guess, both of those cables are probably only designed to connect a USB C device to a USB A port, not the other way around.
At least on Android devices back in the day I remember you needed an adapter cable that was wired to tell the phone "you're the host, not the device".
You probably need a cable that specifically has a USB A female connector permanently attached to it in order to connect a USB A device to a USB C port.
