1440P Monitor Questions

Doixk

Hello all, I recently upgraded my GPU to a 4070 Super and thought it was time to upgrade to a 1440p display. I am currently using (2) 27" 1080P displays and my main one that I use for games is an Asus VG27QM1A 280hz model. I am uncertain about either upgrading my main display to a 1440p 27" or whether to triple monitor my setup and get a 34" ultrawide 1440p display along with my 2 27" ones. I will list all the displays I am considering below for both 27" and 34" and any info or different displays recommended would be extremely helpful in deciding since I am new into the 1440p space. Also to add, I am not too picky on price depending on the value that I would be getting. (I wouldn't want to spend $1000 on a display that isn't worth it.)

I'd steer clear of crazy multimonitor setups, they're just unnecessary unless you have a specific need for it. One monitor is more than capable, a second monitor being marginally useful.

I spent years using crazy multimonitor setups until about 4 years ago where I went back to one quality monitor. If you get a 34" ultrawide, its more than sufficient as a single display in my opinion, worst case, having another monitor off to the side so you can waste energy displaying something you're not looking at often anyways.

It is definitely possible for me to just keep one ultrawide as a primary display. Although I have had 2 monitors now for almost 5 years and the second one has been more than useful many times. Whether it's just having discord up, diagnostics while running stress tests for new components, streaming videos for friends, etc etc. And my ocd self wouldn't want to look at a 34" monitor next to a 27" one. So its more just personal preference. But that will be further down the road once I decide what 1440p monitor to get.

34" UW and 27" are relatively close in size height wise, back before I moved and stuck to a single monitor since, I ran a 34" 1440p UW primary and 28" 4K secondary. Those were pretty close to the same height.

I would have the same, but you're likely running fullscreen windowed already to prevent weird issues with a secondary display, and its just as easy to alt+tab to look at discord quick than turn your head. Its just what I found myself doing instead, and I also noticed its a lot less distracting having an asymmetrical amount of extra light into one eye.

34" 1440 UW is also enough pixels to run multiple windows to multitask, effectively running two 10.5:9 displays which is really close to 4:3 in aspect ratio. That would be for scenarios where you're not gaming and want two browsers open.

I use multiple monitors at work though, but even then, I can accomplish the same tasks by simply using alt+tab. Its mostly because I use a laptop and a 32" 4K, but I could easy use just the 32" 4K for multitasking.

That makes sense, if I do decide to get an ultrawide then I would probably run it standalone for a while since I would have to get a different vesa mount anyways and who knows, I might get used to it.

Do any of those monitors that I mentioned sound like good values or ones to stay away from though?

Same, I run two 27" 1440p.

I'm not sure 'good value' is easy to determine in today's market, since HDR on Windows works great now. You sort of get what you pay for, the only major variable being if you're willing to take the slight risk with OLED. Otherwise, Samsung's QLED VA panels are solid and getting heavily discounted, where my Neo G8 is on par with a mid tier OLED for contrast/color and isn't just marketed as HDR for the box like most budget/mid tier monitors.

Most 'HDR' displays on the market simply can't get the contrast necessary to run actual HDR, and just look washed out. In those cases, you're better running SDR.

I would narrow down specifically what specs/features you want, then see what the options are within that price range. Hypothetical, if getting acceptable HDR isn't worth another $300 but is worth another $100, then spending more might be a better 'value'. The specs in question being size, resolution, refresh rate most.

I’m looking to stay at 1440p and get a 34” ultrawide. And HDR isn’t a huge selling point for me as of now but more pixel response time, refresh rate, and panel technology. Which i know kind of go hand in hand. My only qual i guess is that most ultrawide 1440p monitors that I’ve seen in person (which isnt that many) just look very “weird” whether its the different resolution or whatever the case is. And the only one I’ve personally seen that is better is the Alienware AW3423DWF and Im guessing its only because its OLED.

A lot of curved ultrawides look weird unless you're directly in front of them properly. The more pronounced the curve is, the more severe the 'weirdness' is on any display. Once they're that big, its a bit daunting to look at until you're properly seated in front of it. The two I owned between 2016-2022 were like that, the second one having about twice the curve.

First gen OLED is a bit sketchy, but if you're confident that you can properly not leave it on for hours and shut it off when you're not using it (and it has decent burn in mitigation features) then you should be fine. I just don't trust the technology yet for a high power display, though its worked fine on the Steam Deck and smartphones now for like a decade. I have a sneaking suspicion that the extreme cases we've seen are people who clearly don't use the device properly.
