Input on parts for upgrade

Posted (edited)

Budget (including currency): 20k SEK (Swedish Crowns), which is about 1930 USD

Country: Sweden

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Main use is gaming (games like Star Citizen, Cyberpunk 2077, Helldivers, FFXIV) and everyday use. I don't do any video editing or animation/rendering.

Other details:

Hello!

I've managed to save money during my time at university and I'm now planning to buy some parts when I graduate. These are the parts I am planning to buy:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D
Motherboard: Asus ROG STRIX X670E-F GAMING WIFI
RAM: Kingston 32GB (2x16GB) DDR5 6000MHz CL36 FURY Beast
GPU: GeForce RTX 4070 Super (haven't decided which variant yet)

At current prices these parts would total to about 19.1k-19.9k SEK(about 1838-1915 USD), depending on which variant of the GPU I choose.

I intend to use the new parts with some of my current parts:
CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D15S
PSU: Corsair AX860

Does this look good for a PC that would run 1440p games at mid-high settings at 90+ FPS? Any compatibility issues at all? I've heard from a friend that one should be careful when choosing RAM for AM5 because of potential instability issues, but according to the Asus site for checking memory compatibility, the RAM I have chosen (Part no. KF560C36BBEK2-32) is supported.

Would greatly appreciate any input!

EDIT
Thank you for the responses so far! I have seen the errors of my ways in the choice of motherboard and can see that a B650 will be enough for me, and that I can get better RAM with the money I save from that.

Also, here are some additional specs that might be relevant:
Storage (I do have more drives but I think these are the most relevant):

  • OS Drive: Intel 530 Series 180GB
  • Games Drive: Samsung M.2 SSD 970 EVO PLUS 2TB

Case: Fractal Design North (mesh version)

Few things, you dont need an X670E board, thats real expensive

You can get faster RAM, try get 6000CL30

Your cooler, NH-D15S, instead try get a peerless assassin or phantom spirit, the same or better performance for 1/3 the price

Lemme whip up a pcpartpicker list for you

System specs:

CPU: Ryzen 7 7800X3D [-30 PBO all core]

GPU: Sapphire AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT NITRO+ [1050mV, 2.8GHz core, 2.6Ghz mem]

Motherboard: MSI MAG B650 TOMAHAWK WIFI

RAM: G.Skill Trident Z5 NEO RGB 32GB 6000MHz CL32 DDR5

Storage: 2TB SN850X, 1TB SN850 w/ heatsink, 500GB P5 Plus (OS Storage)

Case: 5000D AIRFLOW

Cooler: Thermalright Frost Commander 140

Hi Itsisen,

With those specs, providing that you're using a high quality SSD to run the OS, I can't see any problems with averaging above 90FPS 1440p high in demanding titles such as Cyberpunk. Also, as far as I'm aware, the only ram instability you should be concerned about is running higher than 7000 speeds with higher than 64gb capacities.

I can't see any problems with the above

Spending almost as much on the motherboard as the CPU is usually a waste of resources. There are many less expensive motherboards that are more than adequate for the system. Consider something like https://se.pcpartpicker.com/product/LwNxFT/msi-mag-b650-tomahawk-wifi-atx-am5-motherboard-mag-b650-tomahawk-wifi or https://se.pcpartpicker.com/product/KrWJ7P/gigabyte-b650-aorus-elite-ax-v2-atx-am5-motherboard-b650-aorus-elite-ax-v2.

Consider a memory kit with better timings. DDR5-6000 CL 30 with EXPO profiles would be better. https://se.pcpartpicker.com/product/LBstt6/gskill-flare-x5-32-gb-2-x-16-gb-ddr5-6000-cl30-memory-f5-6000j3038f16gx2-fx5

You may need to get an AM4 / AM5 adapter for the NH-D15S. Available directly from Noctua. https://noctua.at/en/nm-am5-4-mp83-mounting-kit

While the AX860 is a good PSU, I suspect that it's age would suggest replacing it with a new, ATX 3.0 compliant model. One that has native support for the 12VHPWR connector used by the GPU. The cost would mostly be covered by selecting a B650 motherboard. https://se.pcpartpicker.com/product/bNBzK8/seasonic-focus-gx-850-atx-30-850-w-80-gold-certified-fully-modular-atx-power-supply-atx3-focus-gx-850https://se.pcpartpicker.com/product/4XsV3C/be-quiet-pure-power-12-m-850-w-80-gold-certified-fully-modular-atx-power-supply-bn505, or

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

Oh wow thank you all for mentioning this! After checking it out I realize that a B650 is enough for me, and that I can get better ram with the money saved.

Since some of you included storage and cases in your lists, I just want to mention that I already have the following:
Storage (I do have more drives but I think these are the most relevant):

  • OS Drive: Intel 530 Series 180GB
  • Games Drive: Samsung M.2 SSD 970 EVO PLUS 2TB

Case: Fractal Design North (mesh version)

I have also edited my original post in this thread to include this info

Why don't you use the 970 for OS? I know that wouldn't give the intel drive any use but the 970 should be faster

try this

Simply because I have used the Intel drive for OS since my first build in 2015 and I am too lazy to replace it with a new drive and reinstall windows 😅 The 970 was a purchase from just a few years ago meant only for game storage. Have actually been wondering lately if I should replace the OS drive with a new SSD or an M.2
