Robotics competition coming soon

olidem123

I have been wanting to write about this for a while, but felt like this is not really the type of content LTT usually posts. However, I just realized that this is what got me into tech, so here we go.

I have been participating in a robotics competition called FIRST Robotics Competition for high-school students for 9 years now (used to be a student, now act as a mentor). I now teach computer science in cégep (between high school and uni in Québec) and am starting my PhD to teach in university. My involvement in FIRST has been the most impactful experience in my life and I feel like trying to give it more exposure is the least I could do.

Since January, thousands of students around the world have been planning, building, wiring and programming their robots. Some teams even train strong entrepreneurial skills to their students.

If you want to see their robots in action, there will be several events in the next few weeks, there might even be one in your area (there is one in Victoria, BC this weekend). You can find a list of all events here: https://www.firstinspires.org/team-event-search#type=events&programs=FRC

Also, you can watch competitions from your own home on Twitch (although this looses a bit of the human aspect) here: https://frc-events.firstinspires.org/watch

Thanks for reading me!

Also, my first language isn't English, so there most likely are a lot of errors in my post, sorry!

I'm very jealous of folks these days that get to do stuff like FIRST that wasn't around or available when I was in high school!

It's a great background and bridge into combat robotics, which is my jam 😄

As an alumni now mentor and volunteer working on becoming a teacher, I have to agree that FIRST Robotics Competition is a major driving force in my life and without it I'd be very lost. It's a fantastic organization.
