All the stuff below is detail, that is required but old, Now, from one of the previous responses to the post, i have been told that this could be a sign of header corruption, is there anyway i can use some software to fix it and restore the drive to working condition? Do I really need t go fond a data recovery provider? What can i try to revive the drive myself? Note I don't have an extra drive i can clone this one to for working on.

WD blue SA510

It was a boot drive for an old HP workstation that i had upgraded in 2022. The drive was new and part of that upgrade. The serial number checks out as a legitimate drive under warranty with WD on their website.

Complete failure. Time of death : 6.20p.m. IST

I tried restarting the system initially, but it just kept saying disk error and not booting.

I took it out and plugged it into my laptop with a cheapo- usb a to sata adapter I have and it disk comes up as needing to be initialised in windows.

There is some very important data on that.

Questions:

Is it really dead?

Apart from anything that could kill it, is there anything I can do here to attempt to get it running?

Does WD cover data recovery under warranty?

Should I go looking for a local lab or do it through WD, which may take more time and money, including needing to ship overseas maybe?

There's something about data recovery plans on the website, I bough mine through a third party, are data recovery plans only available through WD themselves?

PLS help, one of my most important machines is dead now along with all the mission critical and archival data on it(about 250 gb of the 1tb drive)

also the wd my passport external hard drive that my family kept their photos on is also dead. Probably has been for a year-ish now that i think about it. (i plugged it into windows and it just didn't show up) how long does it take before the data just dies from bitrot? The hard drive ran continuously through the pandemic attached to my router and i never turned it off, probably why it died. Data recovery is better for hard drives right?

THIS PART IS NO LONGER VALID:

TLDR

I SHALL NOT BE ABLE TO LOOK INTO THIS MATTER FOR A MONTH, PLEASE REPLY ONLY WITH SUGGESTIONS FOR HOW TO STORE THE DRIVES RIGHT NOW.

Imagine everything i have written in a Linus Voice/ linus tone (Spock live long and prosper gif here ,idk why tho, i guess i just want to say that i like star trek and am waiting for new seasons of the ongoing shows), But seriously, a lot of what i type only makes sense when said in a Linus tone from an older ltt video (circa 2017-2019 & now 2024-onwards) basically before he got a beard and a lot of it should make sense even in a Linus with a beard face.

also note as per the latest typing test on my laptop, my accuracy is 69%

I'm not weird/creepy, I'm just observant I have ADHD and am not on any meds for it because I don't want to and don't need to be on meds. i also may just be depressed. If you find other things around you depressing, are you depressed or are you surrounded by depressing things?

as long as the memory chips isn't damaged it should be recoverable, but you would need to hand it in to an electronic repair shop that can solder and search for failed components on the ssd mainboard...  if you deliver a working SSD of same type/ build it's possible to move the memory chips to the working and recover.

depending on where in the world you are there are a few that have a youtube channel too.

I'll probably want to look into WD's warranty services won't I?

.. i just saw you got it to want to initialize...  means the TOC can have been corrupted,  and therefor it's not seeing anything on the disk and it as uninitialized..

SSD's usually replaced corrupted parts of the memory, and if the toc header was corrupted it can be it is all still there but you would need some decent software to scan it..

if you have a cloning station i would try to put the disk in source and clone the entire disk to a working SSD.. then work on the clone..  connecting the broken disk to a computer can cause more damage and make it unrecoverable.

As @ToboRobot wrote, did you try any rescue software ? also I'd connect that drive directly to a desktop via SATA.

Standard warranty won't cover data recovery

I only connected it for a 2 minutes, and i did not try to access the drive other than what windows already does. I just saw that it was uninitialised in disk manager and unplugged it. It should still be fine though right?

it ran for a bit less than 4

UPDATE: I have unlimited budget on data recovery options. But would like to not delve into frivolous spending

This is the entire situation. I have some every life critical and other events going on for the next month so I won't be able to touch these drives till then after this. Anything i can do to store it in such a way that it stays in the exact condition it is right now?

HDDs are very sensitive to shocks. So an HDD external enclosure is, in my opinion, very hazardous. I bet that HDD was mishandled at some point somehow. (if it really is dead which I'm not yet convinced of)

If they're on a table in a room that's climate controlled at a temperature that's comfortable for people, they won't get any worse.

Just make sure you've got more than a month of warranty left!

3 years on the SSD and 6 months in the passport

also define comfortable for people. Indian people are fine in 35C weather with high humidity

WD's spec sheet says the SSD is fine between -55c and +85c, and 2.5" hard drives like the MyPassport has inside are rated for -40c to +65c.

Basically, just store them indoors some place where they won't get wet or accidentally dropped.

I just realised ur a mod. How easy would it be to revive this thread after a month?

Just reply to it again when you're ready to take care of the drives, and it will bump back to the top of the list. Replying to yourself to bump the thread once per day is generally acceptable, but doing it constantly to keep the thread at the top is bad etiquette.

BTW, when looking for data recovery companies for the hard drive who's reader arm won't move, is it possible to get any recommendations for data recovery companies in India? I have wd's go ahead that my warranty can be saved after recovery approval, so any tips on where i could start looking for a competent data recovery company?
