I don't know but when I get more drives (4 - 5) I plan on switching to raid 6, but at the moment I have no clue

And don't forget, if you plan on getting the highpoint card, be sure to buy the rocketRAID, there are other controllers that are called rocket and have the same number (2720SGL) ut don't support raid, I initially bought that card but had to ARM it. Just a heads up.

how much would i need to spend on a raid card for raid 6 or 5

I recommend the LSI 9260 cards, you can get the 4i and 8i (4 and 8 port models) for about $300 and $500, respectively.

for a hard drive it will be more than fine

I'd recommend the LSI 9260 as well, which is what I'm currently running (RAID-5). Don't forget to get the BBU (battery backup unit) for it as well so you can enable write-back caching to improve write speeds without worrying about data loss from a power failure.

  • 3 months later...

I am planning to grab a raid card that can run raid 5 or raid 6 for at least 500 Mega BYTES per second in my home server. Any good suggestions for up to $500 US? Thanks a lot

The 9260-4i (~$350) and the 9260-8i (~$500) are good options.

Also, please don't necro threads. Starting a new one is perfectly acceptable.

I would pick up a surplus IBM ServeRaid M1015 off ebay. You can get them for like 80-90 bucks easy and its really a LSI 9220-8I, you can flash the firmware on it back to LSI defaults and everything.
