Are these RAM sticks (G.SKILL Ripjaws S5 Series 64GB (2 x 32GB)) compatible with this motherboard (Gigabyte Z790 AORUS ELITE AX) ?

Go to solution Solved by BlackDragon1971,

Hi all,

Recently had issues with the motherboard in a new build and I'm looking for a replacement ASAP. This motherboard seems like a viable replacement for my CPU (i7-14700k), but I am not sure if the RAM I have will be compatible with it.

Apologies for the dumb question!

they probably don't know,

yes the motherboard is DDR5 and the RAM is DDR5 so there's a high chance it will work

If you're replacing this because of the BIOS issues with your previous board, I'd get the Aorus Elite AX X (rather than the Elite AX), because this is supposed to be 14th gen compatible out of the box.

That's a good way to spend more than you need though, as they only ever test a tiny subset of RAM sticks out there.

Part of the point of XMP and EXPO is to not need to only use motherboard validated RAM.  For example on my 7800X3D I couldn't, as none of the 32GB sticks validated are actually officially sold in the UK.

Is there a difference between the two boards? or just a BIOS version. Already had the first one on the way haha

I would be shocked if it didn't work.

Do know that there's a couple issues with relying on the QVL to know what will work and what won't. The first is that they are not exhaustive so if you don't find your kit on there, it doesn't mean it won't work. The second is that they use CPUs with top 1% memory controllers, so while it might say the board supports 7600MT/s XMP or higher, that would involve you getting very lucky with the memory controller (this isn't likely to be your problem though since your kit is just 6000 CL30).

G.Skill also has their own QVL that's quite a bit more realistic for what is supported and is usually a bit more complete, I'd want to trust that one more than Gigabyte's personally, though that doesn't mean that it's still 100% accurate (my personal system is running a combo that's not on either QVL, and it works just fine).

Haha, I get it. I haven't built a PC in nearly 8 years so I'm out of my depth here. Always been more of a software guy.

Yup, I did that via Corsair site with their RAM Compatibility tool to find that my RAM was compatible for a few builds of mine. Point is do your research on the hardware you are going to install.

The rear I/O appears to be identical.

The onboard I/O looks identical too, except the non-X doesn't say what audio codec it has and it uses Realtek instead of Intel for the LAN.

The X says it has an 8-layer PCB and claims higher max (overclocked) memory speed, the non-X says 6-layer.

On the face of it, the VRM has the same spec, but if there are changes "under the hood", I don't know.

The main difference I'd care about is 8 layers vs. 6 layers. Without going into too much detail, more layers is more better (usually). The 6 layer boards have a tendency to have the PCB itself get rather warm under full load when running a 14700K/14900K without power limits, while that isn't an issue on the 8 layer boards due to their power plane's extra cross sectional area. The 8 layer board also has a better memory topology and therefore have an easier time running high frequency, but if you're just running DDR5 6000 at XMP, it doesn't matter as both will have no problem doing that sort of speed.

If you already have the non-X shipped, I wouldn't worry about it. The main benefits of the -X is its better high speed memory support and better handling of no power limit i7/i9s, but since you're not running that high of a CPU speed and your going to running air cooling where you can't run it without power limits anyway (the NH-D15 can't handle a 14700K at 300W+), those benefits don't matter.
