WSL install vhd size is unexpectedly large

haxvious

Hey all! I just noticed a while ago that my C drive was getting full. checking wiztree showed me some confusing sizes, attached. As a sanity check, I also ran the df command in my wsl install. That showed me different amounts altogether, also attached. I also have docker desktop, but theres almost nothing on there except for some kubernetes images.

Can anyone make sense of this and how to decrease the size of the vhds, or something? If there is anything else you need to know about my system, please lmk. Thanks!

You can try to open windows terminal as admin, stop wsl with

wsl --shutdown

then run optimize-vhd on the file

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/powershell/module/hyper-v/optimize-vhd?view=windowsserver2022-ps

Optimize-VHD -Path .\ext4.vhdx -mode full

It might save some, but also not necessarily.
