Samsung Galaxy S5 Vs. HTC One M8 Vs. Google Nexus 5 Vs. LG G2

Go to solution Solved by dizmo,

Nexus 5 if you need a device that's cheap. It's at best average in all categories.

The Samsung S5 is all right, but I hate Touchwiz, am not a fan of the increased size over the S4, etc. It gets bonus marks if you need to carry around massive amounts of media, as it has a microSD card slot.

If you drop your phone in water or toilets a lot then it might be worth considering seeing as it's water resistant.

The HTC is awesome if you don't need a decent camera. It's camera is garbage. Other than that, it's an awesome device. Great speakers, microSD, nice feel in the hand. It'd be a stellar phone if they ditched the ultrapixel camera.

At the end of the day, you've still only got 4mp to play with.

The LG G2 is what I'd go for out of the three, especially since you can generally find it for free on contract/upgrade or pretty cheap on the used market. I've often seen them for around $350 brand new, in the box.

It gets better battery life than the Samsung, and honestly is very comparable performance wise. It's smaller, with a larger IPS screen.

Basically this:

Cheap + good camera and best battery life - G2

Cheap + stock Android - Nexus 5

Waterproof + photos + media whore - Samsung S5

Media consumption + media whore - HTC M8

I'm looking at new phones right now as well. Honestly the G2 is leading, only because I want a decent camera. Otherwise I'd probably go HTC M8 and just buy a decent point and shoot.

Have you looked at the G3 at all? It comes out in 6 days. Should best the Samsung S5 by a fair margin.

No OnePlus One?

I think he wants a phone he can actually buy ;)

What do you guys think is the best?

Provide your arguments and such please. I'm trying to decide on what I might want as my next phone as my current phone is slowly dying on me as we speak.

Thanks a lot.

The Nexus IMO for pure Android as for spec wise the S5 is the fastest by a little bit because it has a Snapdragon 801 which is a better binned 800 then the G2 because it throttles the less than the others but the G2 and M8 have a pretty horrific skinned Android.

I have the s5 and I'm really enjoying it! While it isn't made of recycled pop cans, the feel of the plastic back is nice and its easy to grip in the hand. Being water resistant is a very nice feature, I don't have to worry when using my phone in the rain. The screen makes every other screen look washed out and bad. The auto focus is also lightning fast which makes taking action shots easy. It's definitely isn't the best price to performance phone like the g2 or nexus 5 but it has a feature set that no other phone currently has.

No OnePlus One?

Haven't actually heard of them before. Quite surprised I haven't, but then again I'm not really informed about the phone world, hence the need for this post.

Not really looking for a good camera, because I rely on my DSLR more (plus I'm sort of on the HTC boat since my current driver is one too), but I'll look out for the G3 to see how that goes. This is probably the worst part of looking for a new product to replace your current one. Decisions, decisions, decisions. :\

Yeah, there's always downsides. If you were on HTC before I'd just stick with it. The M8 is a great device. I wish the screen were bigger and body smaller with a better camera but I guess you can't have it all.

If you want a device asap I'd go M8. I wouldn't buy a G3 till there are some reviews out regarding battery life, since it has that 1440p screen.

Apparently the OS for the OnePlus phone can be pretty buggy.

I was leaning towards an M8 since I started looking towards a new phone, but I'm going to keep my mind open for now, and thanks a lot for all your help, the tl;dr is really helpful. Will look forwards to the G3 release to see how it fares.

The OnePlus does look like a real good value though, so it might be worth it if they get around to patching the OS up.

And thanks a lot again, I don't really trust websites comparing the devices, and they only compare a few of them together and not all in one like you did.
