Help! MOBO and NVME

Hello, 

I'm in the process of purchasing parts and I've come across a question in regards to NVME 5.0. So my MOBO is going to be the Asus ROG Strix Z790-E, and I've noticed that they have made the board with a NVME 5.0 slot. So my question is... will that slot take away from my 4090 in terms of PCIE lanes. Really I'm asking to confirm since the nvme 5.0 is fairly new and im not up to date with all of that.

I haven't completely decided on getting the 5.0 vs the 4.0 yet. i was reading with some people that they were experiencing performance drops and i didn't want to run into that.

On this board your PCIe slots are not effected by the M.2 slots.

 

Correction: the x16 slot becomes an x8 slot if you use the gen 5 M.2 slot. This shouldn't effect performance as GPUs don't actually utilise a full PCIe gen 4 x8 connection.

 

You can find more details in the boards specs page and manual.

 

This sort of issue isn't really dependant on the generation of PCIe or NVMe. Instead it changes from board to board.

Paying more typically only gets you features you won’t use. 2) only get as much RAM as you need, getting more won’t (typically) make your PC faster. 3) While I recommend getting an NVMe drive, you don’t need to splurge for an expensive drive with DRam cache, DRamless drives are fine for gamers. 4) paying for looks is fine, just don’t break the bank. 5) Tower coolers are usually good enough, unless you go top tier Intel or plan on OCing. 6) OCing is a dead meme, you probably shouldn’t bother. 7) "Bottlenecks" rarely matter and "Future-proofing" is a myth. 8) AIOs don't noticably improve performance past 240mm.

PCs are one of my hobbies and I've built many PCs and performed upgrades on a few laptops (for myself, friends and family). My personal computers include 3 windows (10/11) machines and a TrueNAS server (and I'm looking to move to dual booting Linux Mint on my main machine in future). While I believe I have an decent amount of experience in spec’ing, building and troubleshooting computers, keep in mind I'm not an expert or a professional and I make mistakes.

There should be no performance drops from using a gen 5 slot or gen 5 drive (provided the quality of the board or SSD isn't lower).

It was on pcpartpicker, the problem they were having was an issue where their 5.0 was stealing lanes from the gpu and was having about a 3% performance drop from it

LGA 1700 only has 16 gen 5 lanes. This depends on your board, but you can't run a x16 gen 5 gpu and a gen 5 m.2 drive at the same time.

 

Id get a gen 4 nvme ssd. Gen 5 really doesn't make a difference for almost all uses these days.

Looking at the boards specs the M.2_1 will affect the main slot

See, I was thinking that too in terms of getting the 4.0. on the other hand I've been seeing where people have been getting a significant performance increase with running 5.0 (boot times, download speeds, etc..)

Ok, help me with this. I did have planned to get the 980 pro 500gb for OS and the 990 pro 2TB for all other operations. This is more ideal?

Both of those are gen 4 m.2 drives, so just use a different slot for the m.2 and it will run at full speed.

So run both the 980 in slot 2, and 990 in slot 3 and just avoid slot 1?

Yes (although I doubt it will make much difference), but I'd also recommend cheaper drives. The Samsung drives are great, but they are also kinda overpriced.

Paying more typically only gets you features you won’t use. 2) only get as much RAM as you need, getting more won’t (typically) make your PC faster. 3) While I recommend getting an NVMe drive, you don’t need to splurge for an expensive drive with DRam cache, DRamless drives are fine for gamers. 4) paying for looks is fine, just don’t break the bank. 5) Tower coolers are usually good enough, unless you go top tier Intel or plan on OCing. 6) OCing is a dead meme, you probably shouldn’t bother. 7) "Bottlenecks" rarely matter and "Future-proofing" is a myth. 8) AIOs don't noticably improve performance past 240mm.

I'm a PhD student working in the fields of reinforcement learning and traffic control. I have seen very little or no performance improvement going gen 5, so I'd stick with gen 4 here.

I got lucky and got the 980 for $49.99 back in July, and i got the 990 for around $120-$130 around black Friday

I was wanting to pick up a 3rd NVME to Clarify my original post. Sorry if there was any confusion. I'm doing a complete upgrade and i am moving my 980 and 990 over to the new PC and didnt know if a 5.0 would be worth it. With everyones help, I think I will just get a 4.0 instead. Thanks for the Help again!
