3440x1440p OLED?

So, with getting a new Steam Deck with the OLED screen... and playing on both simultaneously (her on the Deck)... noting how my screen and hers look different.  So I played New World on it and wondered about replacing my 100p UW VA panel.

 

While I firmly believe in buying good stuff to get years of use... do I need to drop another $900 on a monitor to get a really nice OLED UW?  

 

Are there some to look into?  Budget isn't set yet, but I'd like to be in the $400-500 range max.

 

May or may not pull the trigger, but I would like a bit more fps.  I'm locked at 100Hz currently.

They dont exist in that price range lol. They are all 800-1500$. Since you want the UW, its gonna be either the Dell Gen 1 panels, or one of the samsung ones. They still go for 800-1200$. Sometimes a deal is on the lowered end of that but with the new panels coming out soon i dont think youll be getting that unless you buy used.

Ugh, thanks.  I was looking at the G9 earlier but I don't want a Super UW.

 

I guess I'll wait a little longer then.

Unfortunately, at least until the new generation models start coming out this year and next and you can pick up an AW3423DWF for cheap, yeah. That pop you're looking for is achievable with OLED and good Mini-LED displays and unfortunately, the Mini-LED market for 21:9 ultrawides is not great or just absurdly priced. Example

You're better off waiting for a AW3423DWF to go on sale which it does frequently but only down to $800 or so.

This makes more sense when you're looking at tools, furniture, clothing and other things which are "timeless"
Electronics are NOT timeless. Monitors drop by 10-30% each year while generally getting more performant, and more reliable (save for at the very very low end).

Also a lot of the timeless stuff is best bought used, from someone who is either desperate to get rid of it (moving), doesn't need it (change in circumstances) or is dead (estate sale)

I make a point of buying GOOD stuff for about the price I could sell it for. I had a half dozen designer shirts arrive off ebay yesterday. I spent around $15 on each. Some still had their $~200 price tag on them. 

You don't NEED to spend $900 on a monitor. There's a lot of solid options out there for less. 

Unless you're making revenue off of the monitor (e.g. side hustle streaming or gaming), I'd expand my selection to GOOD VA based panels with multizone backlighting (mini-LED) and used. Also consider 4K TVs if you're OK with 120Hz being peak refresh rate. You can literally disable the top half of the screen if you want to simulate ultra-wide. I say this as someone who went from 34" 3440x1440 to 55" 4K (QN90A). I'm not a "competitive gamer" though.

Tried setting a custom resolution with a higher frame rate? Think you can make a custom resolution in your gpu drivers

 

Obviously there will be a limit both soft (colours start looking odd or the monitor becomes grainy looking atleast thats what i saw when running my dads craptop at 84hz) and hard (monitor straight up blackscreens) but you may get a few extra hz out of your monitor

keep in mind that the deck oled will look better than any monitor you buy, but if you are set on buying something uw, then the dwf is probably the best choice, i've seen it as low as 750usd.

Your budget is not possible to get Ultrawide OLED.

The Dell Alienware AW3423DWF is pretty much what you're looking at when it comes to 1440p ultrawide OLED monitors. Most of the time it's the cheapest of the monitors using that particular panel. But like others said, you need to spend at least double your inteded budget to be able to afford a QD-OLED ultrawide monitor. You'll have to decide for yourself if it's worth it.

 

For me personally, i'll probably never buy another LCD monitor ever again. OLED monitors are just overall better in both motion performance and image quality at the same time. My LG C2 has been great ever since i got it a year back and i'm looking forward to the new OLED monitors coming out until i'm willing to upgrade again. Burn-in is the only big tradeoff imo but the severity of this tradeoff mostly depends on your particular useage patterns. As long as it's mostly used for recreational purposes i'd say it's close to a non-issue. If the use case is mostly for work, i wouldn't recommend an OLED monitor.
