1070 vs 3050

Pagsta

So, I recently got my hands on a super cheap EVGA 3050 card and am debating about replacing the 1070 im currency using.  At first glance this may seem like a no-brainer to go with the newer card, but after some digging it appears that on paper, they should perform fairly similarly, so I wanted to get some input.  (Basically it's the higher class older card vs lower class newer card) The current card I'm running is an Asus ROG Strix 1070 OC, and the new one is an EVGA RTX 3050 XC gaming.  What's everyone's thoughts?

Not worth spending money on something that is effectively a sidegrade. Unless you specifically want DLSS (forget about RT on such a low end card, it's too slow for practical use)

Yeah, I've already got both cards, whichever I don't use is going into a secondary rig, just wasn't sold on which way to go

I wouldn't upgrade unless you are specifically wanting some of the new hardware/software features of the 3050 such as DLSS. Gpu benchmark shows the 1070 as being faster in every section.

Important to note that UserBenchmark is fairly unreliable and skews the average performance towards the higher end, since most everyone who runs UserBenchmark is running moderate to high overclocks everywhere.

At stock speeds, 1070 vs 3050 is pretty much a toss up, but the 1070 scores higher on UserBenchmark because Pascal could be overclocked more effectively than anything that came after it, and most people who ran Pascal did overclock.

Userbenchmark shouldn't be used by anyone it's a joke.

3050 is a newer architecture with dlss capability and it uses less wattage , If you allready have it then keep it and sell the 1070.

I'd use the 3050 as main given the two are ball park same performance.

  • You have RTX related features on hand so you have the option to use them
  • Slightly more power efficient
  • Generally on NV, when comparing cross generations at similar gaming performance, the newer will be more efficient at compute.
  • It will have Mesh Shader support that Alan Wake 2 needs that Pascal doesn't have. This may apply to more games looking forward.
  • Newer video codecs
  • Support for VRR over HDMI

could always pop it in and test run for a few days/weeks to see if it improves your usual loads. swapping back and forth should be a mostly non-issue since they're both Nvidia cards.

The other thought I had was to run them both in parallel for a while.  (Assuming there's enough lanes on the mobo of course)

Keep the 1070 for backup in the not-too-likely chance the 3050 craps itself. In terms of raw performance, the 3050 is basically the 1070 with extra RT and DLSS functionality.
