OLED Burn-in and Monitor Questions

Meowingtonhaxor

Hey all,

I'm in the market for a new monitor. I've been using an Acer Predator XB271 for the last five years and I think I would like to upgrade. I am particularly looking at something in the ultrawide range with vivid colors and HDR support. I've been looking at the beloved Alienware AW32423DW/DWF or the Samsung Odyssey Neo G8; both of which are QD OLED panels.

I have never used or owned OLED in anything other than my smartphone, so I am nervous about dropping four digits on a monitor that may burn in within a handful of months (if the posts on Google are to be believed). I've seen some posts reporting burn-in in as little as a couple of months, and some people having no issues after a year or two. I'm wondering if anybody may have any insight into how truly prevalent of a problem this is and if it's worth the risk.

As far as what my use cases go, my monitor is a workhorse. I do video editing, media consumption, gaming, and writing on my display, and elements don't usually stay in one place for more than an hour or two at a time -- unless I'm playing World of Warcraft, Street Fighter, or Fortnite.

If there might be a better option for me (WQHD, 1440p+, 144Hz+, ultrawide, ~$1,000USD-$1300USD) please let me know, I would love to continue investigating. I want my monitor to last as long as my Predator has at the very least, especially if I am going to be spending the kind of money a premium monitor runs.

This is mini-LED in VA.

The OLED model is Samsung Odyssey OLED G8.

burn in

So far all my OLED display no burn-in issue, this included LG C9 purchased in year 2020. This used as TV.

I also owned LG OLED Flex and Samsung Odyssey OLED G9, both purchased in year 2023 and used as PC monitor, so far so good.

I believe as long you not using it always 100% brightness and not turn off pixel shifting and let screen clearing by itself when idle, the burn-in is not that easier to happen.

I've had the Alienware DWF for about a year. I work from home and also use my computer a lot casually - the monitor is on probably about 10-12 hours per day. No problems with burn-in. I like this monitor a lot and recommend it to anybody that can afford it.

I've been using an LG C2 42" as my main monitor for over a year now and also don't have any burn-in problems. I also have an LG C9 55" which i've been using as my living room TV since mid 2019, also no burn-in.

Some of the QD-OLED displays have experienced temporary image retention, which looks the same but isn't permanent burn in. That's mostly because some brands don't implement the pixel cleaning algorithms correctly and they don't run consistently, cleaning up the image when the monitor is not in use.

In my experience LG is by far the best brand when it comes to software support and general lack of issues but they haven't released any QD-OLED monitor yet. But i can wholeheartedly recommend any of their WOLED displays, be it the C2, C3 or 27GR95QE. They don't offer a 34" ultrawide monitor yet, but their 42" 16:9 TV's are priced similarly while offering the same width as a 34" ultrawide but with the added height. This is in my experience even more immersive than ultrawide. And if you do want an ultrawide experience these TV's offer a native ultrawide mode, where only the 21:9 part of the screen is used with black bars on the top and bottom. But idk why anyone would want to pass on the extra height of the image.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.

This is issue at least for Samsung QD-OLED.

Samsung did not provide option for manual cleaning. It will only tell you when necessary based on their calculation where the next restart will trigger the auto cleaning. So if the user didn’t notice it and power of the monitor instead of restart, I think the cleaning will not run. Samsung really should put in manual cleaning option. 😅

I'd say this should happen completely automatic. Manual cleaning isn't necessary if the automatic cleaning actually takes place. But with Samsung and Sony displays in particular this doesn't always happen.

I don't have to do manual cleaning on any of my LG displays. The automatic algorithm runs whenever it's needed after i turn off the display. I simply don't have to think about it.

Actually manual is helping when happen temp image retention. This happen to my LG OLED Flex after few days purchase, why there I not sure, but thanks to it manual cleaning, it solve the issue and never happen again.

As you highlight Samsung and Sony auto cleaning sometimes not happen, I actually never know it is cleaning or not as they is never have complete cleaning notification, so far nothing happen but if something happen like temp image retention, they is no quick way for solving it,
