Slow startup/boot...

Hey, I have a really annoying problem.

I have an NVME SSD and an HDD. 

My windows is downloaded on the NVME. And in the boot order the NVME is set first.

When I turn on my PC, it takes 50 seconds!!! And when I unplug the HDD, it boots in 30 seconds.

I have all the startup apps disabled.

What could be the problem?

Does it take that long to post? Or to boot windows? What is post behavior set to?

50s sounds long but a desktop with an HDD will take longer because the HDD has to be started for the desktop to boot.

I guess my HDDs take around 10s to be on track. From 0 to 7200rpm.

Of course HDD boot takes longer than SSD, but I've had a variety of HDDs in the past 20 years, and I don't recall any of them taking 10 seconds before Windows even starts loading. IIRC, my HDD's spin up sound takes 2-3 seconds tops.

 

Back to your issue at hand, and some possible stuff to consider:

  • How full is your SSD? 80+% can result in worse performance.
  • Is TRIM/optimization enabled? Open the Windows defrag/optimize tool, ensure it at least runs weekly if not daily, and manually run it if it hasn't run before. If tons of file deletions or writes happen, but TRIM hasnt happened lately, overall performance can get worse.
  • Was a fresh install of Windows done on the SSD, or was the HDD just cloned/copied over to the SSD? If not a fresh install on SSD, then you can't rule out Windows getting bloated because it hasn't been installed from scratch. 
  • What is the random speed benchmark of you SSD? Use crystaldiskmark. Compare it to a benchmark of your SSD model elsewhere online. If you can't find it because either the maker or model number is too obscure, then consider that OEM (made for prebuilt systems) or off brand SSDs could be slower than name brands that have been reviewed.

Depends on the drive though. My wd4000fyyz takes 11 seconds to fully spin up, and an additional 6 to finish it's seek test.

Give us a disk management screenshot ( all of it ).

do not even include the HDD in the boot order.


do you boot in uefi mode? 

do you use fast boot?

My computer with 3 HDDs and 1 OS SSD just took 28s until boot screen. During that time I hear HDDs getting ready (maybe not all at once).

They are all diagnosed in perfect condition by HD Sentinel.
