did all this, still comes up with an unrecognised gpu. i might just get a clean install of windows and see if that fixes it

Yes or try this first, remove drivers for the unknown devices, remember to mark uninstall drivers:

After that shut down and reseat GPU and maybe clear CMOS while you're at it, by removing the battery for 5 min while PSU is off.

this morning i woke up to my computer not working, no signal on monitor. plugged hdmi into motherboard instead of gpu and windows comes up with a startup failure. tried to reinstall drivers because they uninstalled and found that i cant install them on current windows. updated windows and still says that graphics drivers are not compatible. i dont see my gpu in devices either what could have happened overnight? how can i fix this

Try removing the driver in safe mode using this tool https://www.guru3d.com/download/display-driver-uninstaller-download/

Then install it again. But you have to find out what caused this. It's likely that you may have some sort of maleware or even a hardware failure.

i have done this and tried to reinstall the gpu drivers but it says that there is not gpu detected on the system when checking compatibility. even though the lights are working on the gpu could this mean that its dead? or is this another issue

Gpu is not recognised in devices and only comes up as "PCI Device"
Overall i have completely uninstalled my drivers and i am now unable to install them because it says i don't have an "NVIDIA gpu"

Download driver https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/drivers/results/216929/

Download DDU. When opening DDU. choose safe mode. After restarting go into options of DDU and choose disable automatic driver installation from windows update. Run with GPU->Shutdown for installing new graphics card. Then PC will shutdown. Turn it on again If you fiddled with cables check again before turning it on. After booting into windows install the Nvidia driver you've downloaded, restart.

i have factory reset windows, reseated gpu into same pci-e slot and cleared cmos by holding a screwdriver to the 2 pins for ~30 seconds and when i try to install drivers or even see device manager my gpu is still not recognised by my system. is there anything more to do, or is it a lost hope.
also, what could be the source of this problem, the mobo or the gpu?

Did you unplug GPU and clear CMOS by removing the battery? Tried another PCI-e slot?

just from the information above (lights on gpu but fans not spinning, plugged into both pci-e dont work, device not recognised by system yet able to see that its plugged in, device events not recognized gpu, unknown after factory reset and still not able to install drivers) at you best guess do you believe that the gpu or motherboard would be the problem?

events:
