Except 4k at 24 inch is basically unusable outside of gaming without 200% scaling to be able to read text.

I don't plan to use the monitor for anything but gaming, if I really need to you can scale down to 1080p for day to day use right?

Just get a 1400p monitor then...

I gotta say, 4k is really tempting me for gaming though.

It's honestly not very feasible right now, it costs entirely to much, and not enough content for it yet.

If you want to game at 4k I honestly suggest you wait until it doesn't cost over $2,000 to get a big enough screen, and another $1,000+ of GPU's to run it at playable FPS.

If you don't give a crap about your money do it now though.

Have you looked into the ultra wide form factor? I think its a more viable option than 4k because it makes a big difference in your gaming experience but it is not as expensive or hard to read text.

Do most modern games support that 21:9 aspect ratio though?

Games from over 10 years ago can support any aspect ratio, so yes most games can support it unless there is a limitation of the engine or placed upon by devs.
