Looking for an upgrade

LoonyToons

Basic stuff first.

Other half Bought my entire system for £500 a few months ago from eBay for my birthday (She doesn't have the first clue about desktops and I'm her tech support), when I price checked everything brand new (Second hand for the gpu) it worked out as a great deal.

System spec's are

R5 5600x (Running stock speeds atm)

Asus rog strix gaming mobo B550f

16gig Vengeance pro ddr4 (3600Mhz)

H100i pro Aio

EVGA gtx 1080 sc

AoC 60hz 1080 monitor

Some corsair case (Closed front hence no oc'ing has been done yet)

750W Corsair pus (will be changing to a 800+W in the future)

With Black Friday sales here and boxing day sales coming up just after xmas I've already got my sights on a NV5 case and a new monitor min 144hz between 1080 and 1440 resolution.

With around £300 budget (slightly more if needed) what would you guys and girls recommend for a GPU upgrade. I watched Tech Jesus (Gamers nexus) latest video about gpu's in my price range but there is only so many graphs I can look at before getting confused, I would prefer an AMD gpu but Nvidia is ok as well, don't really want intel arc as it's still far too young for my taste.

Also RGB is neither here or there for me so not a big factor.

Use case is Casual Gaming (not into competitive gaming). Not a streamer or into making YouTube videos (as there is more life in a morgue than my voice).

Main Games played are WoW, Call of duty, Battlefield, F1, Fallout series and Starfield.

For 300 GBP, that puts you looking at a 4060 or a 6650 xt. For just frame rates in games the 4060 is slightly better. Even compared to a rx 7600 the 4060 is slightly faster.

At 1080p the 6700xt is about the same as a 4060, and at 1440p it is about 18% faster than the 4060 or the 6650.

You could sneak one of those into your system for ~20 GBP more than your budget.

PowerColor Fighter Radeon RX 6700 XT 12 GB Video Card (AXRX 6700XT 12GBD6-3DH) - PCPartPicker

2 graphs to solve it all.

1080p 15 game average and 1440p 15 game average. The 1080p one is timestamped, but the 1440p one is right after it.

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

I will find your mentions of Ikea or Gnome and I will /s post.

While using other applications also encoding is required such as video editing, playing movies, etc.

You need an Nvidia decoder to watch a movie?

If the system has only a dedicated gpu and it cannot handle av1 movie then the movie will not be able to run properly as far my knowledge.

Both Nvidia and AMD have AV1 decoding in 6000 series and RTX 30 series onwards.

Besides that I can't think of any current movie streaming platforms that only use AV1 , All the ones that use AV1 will default to H264 if it's not supported which basically everything can decode.

No. 7000 series and 40 series onwards have AV1.

You're thinking about AV1 encoding.....not the same thing as av1 decoding.

"

AV1 Decode Is Already Here But Encoding Is The New Trick

AV1 decoding is supported in hardware on AMD RDNA 2 GPUs (outside of the Navi 24 based 6500 XT), NVIDIA GeForce 30- and 40-Series GPUs, Intel Xe and Arc GPUs, along with mobile chips like the Samsung Exynos 2100 and 2200, various MediaTek Dimensity SoC’s, and Google’s Tensor processor."

Well yes ita fine as a side note but recommending cards that are generally worse value on the prospect of AV1 encoding is not great advice.

Thank you all for your input, I don't plan to use the card for any kind of encoding, as for watching movies and such that's all handled by screen sharing from my phone to the mini monitor while I'm sat at my desktop or if I fancy watching on a bigger screen it goes to one of the 2 4k TV's anyway from my partners desktop (as she use's the 4k tv as a monitor anyway). My budget isn't firm as I can go higher if needed I did take a look at the 4060 but 8gb vram feels low compared to 12gb vram on the 6700xt when some games are using this and beyond. So I will more than likely grab a 6700xt. Again thank you all for the replies and voicing your opinions for each card/choice

At that rate, let’s suggest a 4090 because one day they might want the extra performance.

price of rx 7600 is far cheaper than 4090. I suggested rx 7600 because it is similarly priced to rtx 3060 and rx 6600.

With less performance than a 6650xt or 6700 xt.

The idea remains the same. Let's sacrifice something in case OP decides later they want something they don't want right now. In your case, it's performance. In the case of the 4090 it's money.

It's ok guys just dropped the cost of a SpaceX Rocket on the new rtx 5090ti and a nuclear power station to power it, now just need the leads to connect both, but do you think it'l run doom?

6700 XT is pretty much a no brainer since 8GB is terrible in 2023, unless there ends up being a great sale on a 6800 say to clear stock. I would however also recommend getting another 16GB of system RAM since it's probably something you're going to want in the lifetime of your system and since DDR4 is still dirt cheap right now. For instance, playing The Last of Us Part 1 I needed to close every program down to get it to run without massive stuttering when I was playing it with 16GB and it can use upward of 20GB. DDR4 is so insanely cheap no gamer should be running only 16GB these days if they're on a DDR4 system. A year or two from now who knows, RAM could shoot way up in price again.

Yeah I'll be going 32GB soon as well but that will come after the powder coating (sick of single colour case's and RGB isn't my thing) and other modifications are completed to the case first as I'm currently not in great need of the extra 16GB ram.
