Good enough to squeeze by?

haiko

I have a 500 watt PSU with a Ryzen 5 5500 and 6700xt. I'm upgrading to a Ryzen 7 5800x but i'm concerned my current PSU wont make the cut, will I need to upgrade?

Most people will tell you 500W can be enough, but you also have to consider the quality and brand reputation of your powersupply. Without know what you have I honestly think you will be fine as long as you don't do something crazy like run Prime95 and Furmark together at the same time. I have 520 W Seasonic with RX 6800 with 3800X I use light Blender rendering on.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 3950X   Motherboard: MSI X570 Gaming Edge Wifi   Case: Deepcool Maxtrexx 70   GPU: RTX 3090   RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 3x16GB 3200 MHz   PSU: Super Flower 850W

Send pictures of said psu and its wattage table

Id reccomend buying a used 5800x3d instead as thatll be alot more of an upgrade for ~200-250$, but a used 5700x/5800x is also a valid option if you can find em around the 100-140$ range

just dont buy new as youll get ripped off hard on last gen zen3, i mean 130$ for a 5600? I can buy a used 5700x/5800x for that price, and used 5600(x) go for 80-100$

What's the brand and model?

6700XT can spike up to almost 350w for 20ms. You need a PSU that can handle those spikes with a low transient response time.

Its the thermaltake smart 500w, I paid $170ish for the 5800x image.png.9bb78242adcdc51fff7b45f0d302a6b2.png

A 420w is kinda meh so id reccomend buying a new psu though you could also undervolt the gpu

as for the psu if you are gonna go for a cheap unit id advise against that as theyre not worth buying (low wattage, non existent <5y warranty), but judging by your psu choice id reccomend buying a used 750/850w gold like the rm(x) or equivalent for 40-60$ since youll get a much more futureproofed psu

That PSU is bad. Very low quality, terrible voltage regulation because of the internal design with group regulation and lack of protections.
